Simon David: Virgin

Simon David is a multi-talented musician proficient in clarinet, saxophone, accordion and piano. He is also, unfortunately, a virgin and in his new show, he tells us all about it! While being in possession of an un-porked pie is not something most twenty one year-olds would shout about, Simon David knows that to stand out as a performer he must have a Unique Selling Point.

In 2016, virginity is as precious and rare as an exotic Pokemon, and so young Mr. David has decided to put his front and centre in new cabaret show ‘Simon David: Virgin’ which is playing at the Hen and Chickens Theatre in Islington until Sunday 21st.

The show is made up of self-penned musical numbers which Simon performs in nothing but a black leotard backed by a live-band of twinky instrumentalists. I do hope that after his two week run he has the good sense to dry clean both the leotard and the twinks – without sufficient upkeep both can become dark and damp breeding grounds for yeast infections and thrush.

Whilst the script has no shortage of chuckles, the young Simon could be accused of rushing over some of the earlier material where he could otherwise relax a little and allow the better punchlines to linger. None of this matters too much by the time he’s dancing around in a wig singing both as Simon and Simon’s ex-girlfriend Katy (he was ‘straight’ once). This number is the highlight of a musically dynamic show – not least because Simon has to switch in and out of a ridiculous Geordie accent for the rebuked Katy’s lines.

Special mention also to Simon’s fight song ‘Are You Fucking Kidding Me’ where the audience are implored to shout back the song title at the poor virgin as he voices his angst at being spurned by a potential cherry popper in G-A-Y Late.

The show makes up part of the lineup for the Camden Fringe Festival, which is always a highlight of London’s theatrical calendar. Go see the show for live music silliness from a talented young lad in a leotard.
