BACK TO THE BLACK CAP!

Ahead of their huge ‘Back to Black Cap’ Fundraiser raising money for the Amy Winehouse Foundation, QX spoke to Black Cap manager Dan Thomas about why they decided to support one of our most recent singing legends…

What gave you the idea to set up the Back to Black Amy Winehouse fundraiser?

The Mayor of Camden, Jonathan Simpson, asked us many months ago to get involved and support the Amy Winehouse Foundation as his chosen charity. We were delighted to get involved from the outset particularly as September would have been Amy’s 30th birthday. Venues throughout Camden are putting on events to mark the occasion and raise awareness of the work of the Foundation.

Why is Amy Winehouse such a special figure to you and the Camden area in general?

Camden has such a strong music history – from Regina Fong right the way through to Amy. She put the area on the map for people round the world and is a huge musical icon. She had so many gay friends in Camden and is really missed by everyone.

What can we expect from the night itself?

We’ve got the cream of British talent on the night and celebrity friends of Amy coming along. Jonny Woo, Tina C, Le Gateaux Chocolat, Baga Chipz, La Voix, Sandra, Myra Du Bois, Scottee, Lady La Rue, Topsie Redfern, Al Pillay, Titti La Camp, David Mills and June Brown (aka Dot Cotton from Eastenders) will all be there along with some surprise guests. It’s destined to be a night to remember.

What is the cause behind the charity you’re raising funds for?

The Amy Winehouse Foundation was set up two years ago to support young people with drug or alcohol problems. They’ve started a great programme for educating secondary school kids which is set to help over 50,000 kids this year alone in the UK. But they’ve also supported projects throughout London on homelessness.

And finally, are any of your resident drag queens going to be dressed up as la Winehouse herself on the night?!

I expect that Baga Chipz, who does a brilliant heartfelt tribute to Amy, just may put on her beehive for the night. It’s going to be a fantastic celebration of one of the UK’s finest musical talents.

• The Back to Black Cap Gala in aid of the Amy Winehouse Foundation will be on Sunday 29th September, doors at 6pm, show starting 7pm. £10.
