Moore Than A Woman!

Every Monday night you can find a Jägerbomb-wielding Mrs Moore clacking around her ‘Illuminated Runway of Fun’ at The Two Brewers singing ‘beautiful songs’ and cracking gags galore. A showbiz gal through and through, Mrs M is a huge fan of female vocalists, especially the brassy, over the top divas, which is reflected in her shows. Our very own demanding Deidre, Jason Reid, pinned down ‘the voice of a thousand fags’ this week to find out who her top ten musical divas of all time are…

1. Shirley Bassey
1937-Present

Bassey tops my list because, for me, she is the ultimate star diva and also a lifelong idol of mine. The way she can tell the story of a song sets her apart from the rest.

Favourite Song: It’s impossible to choose. I adore all of her songs in almost equal measure.

2. Judy Garland
1922-1969

One of the greats. The emotion she portrayed when she sang live was amazing. Even though elements of her life were deeply tragic her legacy and music lives on to this day, forty-five years after her death. That’s some feat.

Favourite Song: ‘The Man That Got Away.’

3. Annie Lennox
1954-Present

I guess she’s not what many people would class as a diva, in the broadest sense of the term, but to me she is sexy and classy in a beautiful and understated way. She’s also a huge advocate for HIV/AIDS and is always using her profile to help charitable organisations, which is a great thing. Musically, I love her ‘Diva’ album, it still sounds as fresh today as when it was released in 1992.

Favourite Song: ‘Why’.

4. Eartha Kitt

1927-2008

You only have to listen to her ‘Live in London’ album to realise what a talented lady she was. I was gutted I missed her London shows. A fabulously bonkers and eccentric personality made her one of a kind.

Favourite Song: ‘Uska Dara’.

5. Barbra Streisand
1942-Present

The voice on the woman! A celebrated career that has spanned over fifty years as a singer-songwriter and actress; she has also collaborated with some of the world’s best artists. My favourite duet of hers’ was when she and Donna Summer got together for the gay disco classic, ‘Enough is Enough’. And let’s face it, no list of divas would be complete without Babs.

Favourite Song: ‘Evergreen’.

6. Celine Dion
1968-Present

Celine is utterly barmy, with bells on (in a good way). Just look at some of the videos of her backstage on YouTube. But my god can she sing, and she certainly knows how to put on a show. With 200 million albums sold worldwide she is one of the best selling female artists of all time, and still going strong. A true diva.

Favourite Song: ‘Because You Loved Me.’

7. Cher
1946-Present

Another must for this list. Cher is an artist who is constantly reinventing herself (well she changes her wig). A huge gay icon whose music has charted in every decade since the 60s. You can still play her anthemic ‘Believe’ track today and everyone knows and loves it. Her new material is quite good too.

Favourite Song: ‘Turn Back Time.’

8. Beyonce
1981-Present

Probably one of the newest divas on the block – although she does tend to churn songs out every five minutes and not all of them are great. However, ‘Single Ladies’ (Put A Ring On It) has ingrained itself in pop culture as one of the greats of recent years, for many reasons. It’s just one of those songs that will remain forever.

Favourite Song: ‘Irreplaceable.’

9. Madonna
1958-Present

A lot like Cher, Madonna is an artist who is always reinventing herself, changing musical direction – not always for the better – but striving to keep it fresh and relevant. A memory that holds a special place in my heart is when I was shaking my pert eighteen year old arse at Bang nightclub to my favourite song of hers, a few [coughs] years ago.

Favourite Song: ‘Express Yourself.’

10. Adele
1988-Present

Adele is a diva by not being a diva, if you know what I mean?! I love the fact that she hasn’t changed one bit even after all her success. She apparently makes thirty thousand pounds a day in royalties from her two albums alone. Now that is divatastic!

Favourite Song: ‘Skyfall.’

• Mrs Moore is at The Two Brewers (114 Clapham High Street, SW4 7UJ), every Monday. Entry is free before 10pm, £2 after.
