West Five is BACK and ready to welcome you every weekend!

LGBTQ+ bars need the support of the community now like they’ve never needed it before. The current Covid-19 restrictions have halved the turnover of most bars, and these vital safe spaces are in the unenviable position of not being able to plan from one week to the next because the country is still on tenterhooks. West Five is one of the scene’s long running local bars and this week QX’s Jason Reid caught up with Daniel Wood, the venue manager…

Hi Daniel! How’s it all going over there at West Five?

Hi Jason. To be honest it’s been a slow start for us, being a destination venue and a little out of the way.

How have you found reopening after being closed for such a considerable period?

It’s been hard getting back into the swing of things. The restrictions strip West Five of what it’s famous for and we are seeing a very different trading pattern.

What’s your message to the West London LGBTQ+ community right now?

I suppose the real message to the LGBTQ+ community all over is: stay strong and seek any help and support you require.

What’s new? Tell us about the outdoor space and opening hours…

We’ve converted the carpark into a seating area which has helped with this lovely weather we’re having at the moment. We are currently open Friday – Sunday from 7pm and there are different drink promotions every week, which we post on our social media.

Can you also tell us about the fundraiser that’s currently running to support the venue?

West Five is an independent venue and cash flow has been extremely difficult with being closed for such a long period. And as you know a number of bills still have to be paid regardless of trading or not.

To support the venue we would love to see all our old regulars and friends. This is the best way to support any venue. However we understand people are still nervous about going out which has had a huge knock-on affect to footfall. Some customers that can still not attend suggested a GoFundMe page. What’s the plan for the next few months?

Well it’s very hard to make plans at the moment with the current restrictions. We are planning to introduce a quiz with Carmen Dioxide and more details will follow.

Will cabaret be returning once the government gives the green light?

We will reintroduce cabaret once social distancing measures have been relaxed. This will most likely start to happen when we can reopen as the nightclub. The current guidelines on spacing mean we can only fit three tables on the dance-floor!

Taking into account all that’s happened this year, are you optimistic about the future of West 5?

Times are very hard and we are trying to work with our landlords and creditors to ensure the future of West Five. The future really depends on if people choose to visit us during these uncertain times.

West Five resident drag queen Carmen Dioxide says…

“West Five is back open and it’s socially distanced table service for everyone. As soon as we are able to have live cabaret I’m sure we will be bringing out all your favorite performers again as West Five does have an amazing stage. It’s difficult for performers at the moment, not being able to go out there and do what we love to do in front of a live audience. I understand why we can’t – for everyone’s safety – but I can also appreciate how difficult it is for those whose main job is performing. Carmen is stored in her box for now, but once live entertainment is back she’ll also be back. Here’s hoping it’s soon!”
