03/06/16: Friday night in London’s gay clubbing capital Vauxhall, but there’s one venue not belting out the latest deep house beats.
Like a gaytastic time machine The Royal Vauxhall Tavern is keeping cabaret and traditional gay club Hi NRG music alive! Outrageously glamorous door whore Ander welcomes us into the world famous bar with the sounds of the underground 80’s filling the busy dance floor with DJ Dawn Amber Harvey at the decks.
Curtain-up! I’m expecting something fabulous and alternative, and you can’t get more fabulous or alternative than the Lipsinkers. Opening with a loud and colourful holiday sketch the ‘sinkers wow the crowd with their simple but effective choreography, outrageous ‘trashy’ style costumes and big make up.
With fantastic facial expressions and New York-style drag routines I find myself laughing along to the edgy humor and ‘dynamite boogaloo’ style retro imagery. A quick change making good use of inflatable props, then the Lipsinkers are back on stage resembling the New York Klub Kidz.
The crew make good use of their plus-size drag star by dressing her in more traditional style Bet lynch leopard skin or Nicki French style spotted dresses much to the delight of the laughing onlookers. With great non-PC visuals using wheel chairs and dogging masks, the R.V.T. crowd are lapping up the risqué performance.
Interspersed with some very clever non-music mime sketches like the loud whisper of ‘It’s Dave with the stuff – Open the door’ which has me roaring with laughter, the Lipsinkers tick all the boxes of good entertainment with comedy, dance and costume. Fabulously alternative
