SUMMARY:The Brownie Club Meets The Cocoa Butter Club at Afro Futures Festival
DESCRIPTION:East London’s Rich Mix will host Afro Futures\, the latest edition of Certain Blacks’ annual indoor festival presented in the context of recent political unrest. With a soundtrack including DJ sets\, drag artist\, Bollywood dancer and award-winning performer Bolly-Illusion represents The Brownie Club as host while Sadie Sinner the Songbird does the honours for the Cocoa Butter Club. \nTwo 60-minute shows (with interval and DJ). \nSee full lineup at Afro Futures Festival here. \nPhoto: Cocoa Butter Club by Bryan Aseya

SUMMARY:Soul On Ice Festival: Bold Mellon Collective
DESCRIPTION:A new live art commission for Certain Blacks’ Soul On Ice Festival from Bold Mellon Collective. Tickets include entry to performances and a panel discussion about how artists address and express diversity\, inclusion and identity issues. \nGive or Take is an interactive\, intimate performance piece from Bold Mellon Collective that considers gift giving as an act of remembrance and a contract\, bargain\, and transaction. Devised and performed by Tatar multi-disciplinary artist Emilia Nurmukhamet and queer artist Dear Annie\, Give or Take is inspired by Emilia’s memories of giving and receiving ‘sadaqah’\, or voluntary offerings\, at her Tatar family celebrations and days of remembrance. Combining elements of a live game with stylised storytelling\, the piece features a sound score interwoven with spoken text. \nCertain Blacks is an arts development organisation supporting diverse performing artists. Certain Blacks present art from the margins to the mainstream with a wealth of experience producing work in venues and curating outdoor performances.  \nImage: Bold Melon Collective by Tainted Saint

SUMMARY:The Cocoa Butter Club at Soul On Ice Festival
DESCRIPTION:Born as a protest and challenge to the performing arts landscape and frustrated with the lack of diversity\, constant cultural appropriation and other limitations of the cabaret scene\, The Cocoa Butter Club set out to fill a cultural void. Providing a voice for ‘The Other’\, they celebrate performers of colour. From queer voices often shunned from the mainstream LGBTQ+ zeitgeist to non-white creatives wanting to perform something outside of the expected box. The Cocoa Butter Club strive to ‘decolonise and moisturise’ stages\, redistributing the narrative of bodies of colour\, providing agency and autonomy in celebrating the capabilities of their artists. Image: Aimee Mcghee.
