SUMMARY:Cabaret
DESCRIPTION:Tickets from the official box office are available here. \nCabaret was a musical film released in 1972 that was a huge hit. It starred Liza Minelli as Sally Bowles along with Michael York as Brian. Apart from one scene where a song is sung by blond Hitler Youth\, all the songs in the film were staged as part of a cabaret show at the Kit Kat Club. \nThe musical was based on the play by John Van Druten\, called I Am a Camera\, which in turn was based on the book by out gay author Christopher Isherwood\, called Goodbye to Berlin. Isherwood spent time in Berlin during the Weimar Republic\, living a Bohemian life and having sex with young male prostitutes. \n \nBilly Porter to star in Cabaret as Emcee\nAt the end of January\, we will have the added treat of the Emmy award-winning actor Billy Porter playing Encee\, the master of ceremonies at the club. Joining Billy will be Marisha Wallace as Sally Bowles. \nThe Plot\nThe story centres around the relationship between the main characters living the Bohemian life in Berlin during the Weimar Republic. American Sally Bowles performs at the Kit Kat Club. Isherwood’s character is based on a flapper girl that Isherwood shared lodgings with in Berlin called Jean Ross. She was a promiscuous 19-year-old who would hang out singing in lesbian bars and second-rate cabaret shows. In the novel\, Brian moves into the same lodgings as Sally Bowles. He makes a living teaching English while doing his doctorate. They become friends and then lovers. \nSally and Brian meet the playboy Baron Maximilian von Heune\, and things get complicated. This is all set in Berlin during the rise of the Nazi Party\, during which time Berlin’s decadent clubs are eventually shut down. Without giving much more of the plot away\, for those of you who may not already know it\, there is also a subplot that involves Jewish characters with tragic consequences. Overseeing the action is Emcee\, the Master Of Ceremonies at The Kit Kat Club. \nCabaret at The Playhouse Theatre\nThe West End production of Cabaret at The Playhouse has been critically acclaimed. The staging is quite unique as the show allows for an immersive experience at the Kit Kat Club\, as you experience a Berlin cabaret club during the Weimar era. \nTickets from the official box office are available here. \nThis article contains affiliate links.
