Greg Araki’s acclaimed 1993 hit gets digitally re-mastered for a new DVD release, and it’s well worth revisiting as after almost 20 years it’s still eerily current.

The loose story follows 18-year-old Andy (James Duval) and his lively gay buddies, plus a lesbian couple, all of whom are discovering that the road to romantic happiness isn’t very smooth. Meanwhile, they’re feeling disenfranchised due to society’s rampant homophobia (from subtle glances to violent attacks) and the threat of Aids. Araki approaches this as a mordant comedy, which makes it remarkably realistic and involving, even all these years later. (Peccadillo). 8/10
