From Wed 20th – Thur 21st October BFI Southbank will be celebrating the life and impact of Marlon T Riggs; filmmaker and gay rights activist who defied a culture of silence and shame to speak his truth with resounding joy and conviction.

Gay black man
Tongues Untied
Southbank will be playing two of Marlon’s acclaimed works, TONGUES UNITED, a playful and affirming documentary which asks the question, what does it take to claim your rightful Black identity as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community?  and BLACK IS … BLACK AIN’T, Marlon’s final film, made as he dies from AIDS related complications, directly addresses issues with misogyny and homophobia in the black community.

Both films will include an intro from programmer and the BFI’s Race Equality Lead Rico Johnson-Sinclair.
