This month marks three years since Trough club first landed in London from sunny antipodean shores to launch Trough London. It caused quite the stir on the scene, brimming with frenetic, fun, fizzy life.

All of their events and parties over the years have been steamy successes, with people hotfooting it from all over London and even further afield to drink, dance and debauch at what’s become one of the gay scene’s most popular club nights.

To celebrate its third birthday next Saturday, Trough’s taking over notorious hive of hedonism, the Fire & Lightbox complex in Vauxhall. It’s a three-room event, with two dance floors playing host to renowned DJs like Massimo Paramour, Tony Bruno and Zola, as well as a “hide and seek” room (we’ll leave that one to your imagination).

If you’re still buzzing afterwards, you can stay on at the same venue for Orange Nation’s infamous after-hours party Beyond. We spoke to Trough head honchos Sergio and Nik to find out more about what to expect from the night, and from Trough in the future.

TROUGH London

Trough’s been in London for three years…what’s the reaction been from people? Have things gone as you expected?

When we started Trough in London, of course we had big plans and an idea of what we wanted the party to be. Like with any project, it took on a life of its own and became something more than we could have imagined. The response from people who have experienced it has been extraordinary. The reason for this may be that we’re giving people what they want, even if they didn’t know they wanted it.

What do you think of how the London scene has changed in that time?

In the past couple of years, we’d say that London has welcomed techno DJ’s of international acclaim, as well as exploring sexuality in a way that previously had mostly been synonymous with cities like Berlin. Trough has played a huge part in bringing together jocks, bears, otters, hunks, queers, beards, twinks and in-betweeners, in a place with no judgment, dress code or inhibitions. Everybody is welcome to join, party and experience something new. It’s different every time.

What’s been your favourite moment over the last three years?

Our favourite moment so far has been Trough’s second birthday party, which was last year. People came from all over the world to celebrate with us. The energy was incredible and was definitely the pinnacle of just how epic, sweaty and dirty we can get. Our third birthday party will be on the 25th of January, and we’ve had an even bigger response so far. It looks as though we’re set to top last year… so get ready for a night of sin and debauchery.

Plans for the future?

A lot of promoters and artists from abroad have been approaching us, so it looks like we might take TROUGH around Europe, as well as introducing more amazing DJ’s from around the world to TROUGH London. We’re gonna keep each party fresh because we want to keep our audience excited and satisfied! Thanks to our party goers, TROUGH has become what it is today and we’re not slowing down. We’ve got 2020 vision and things are looking thick and juicy.

Trough – The Birthday is on Saturday 25th January at Fire & Lightbox Complex, 39 Parry Street, SW8 1RT. 10pm – 6am.
