Glitzy Von Jagger writes about playing in Fairytale on Church Street at The Cockpit Theatre, from 8 December to 30 December.

I am beyond thrilled to be making my Dame debut in this fantastic show at The Cockpit in Marylebone, London. I’m playing MotherHood, a sassy, working-class battle-axe of a woman.

I’m taking inspiration from many of the strong northern women I grew up around and watching on tele in Yorkshire with my Nan and Mam.

She’s got some gay bangers to belt out, a bit of Bonnie Tyler and Gloria Gaynor is in there, and we even have a lesbian romance in the show, which is incredibly sweet to hold space for in a family show. I’ve always been camp as tits, but this role is allowing me to ramp up the theatricality bones even further; I’m having a ball!

Kathryn Gardner, who wrote (and is directing) the book, has created a very inclusive world, bringing all your favourite fairytale characters into modern-day London; the score has been devised by our MD Meg Cavanaugh and our Actor/Musos, who are all ridiculously talented.

One has had to step one’s moggy up! Our cast includes Artie Godden as my handsome son Robin Hood, the devilish Lauson Kenyon as the Big Bad Wolf, Emilia Harrild as the gregarious Goldilocks and Cary’s McQueen as the showbiz sasspot Red Riding Hood.

We’ve included a soundscape that reflects the area the show is based in; it’s culturally rich and such great fun. We are singing, dancing, acting, and playing live instruments all in the round at the cockpit, which is one of the grooviest spaces I’ve ever performed in. Dave Wybrow is at the helm and is an absolute darling and a producer/director.

Honestly, the show is excellent and a must-see this Christmas; bring yourselves and all your favourite human beans down. Panto is so awesome with that old-time honoured tradition of introducing children to their first theatre and gender-bending experience, and our show is honestly excellent; I’m very proud to be a part of it.
