Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley will debut a new immersive gaming experience, THE REBIRTHING ROOM, at Studio Voltaire from 31 January to 28 April 2024. The exhibition was developed over a year-long residency at Studio Voltaire, and it is her first institutional solo exhibition in London.

The expansive thematics of Brathwaite-Shirley’s practice include digital real estate, archiving, and possible futures of Black and Brown trans bodies.

For THE REBIRTHING ROOM, Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley has ‘hacked’ the technology of a VR headset, turning it into an audience-operated controller.

The headset’s individualised screen experience will become a large-scale projection-mapped environment, requiring the audience to work collaboratively in order to navigate the space. The game is set within a forest and challenges the audience to be ‘reborn in authenticity’.

¨Brathwaite-Shirley’s practice seeks to archive the Black trans experience using technology to imagine Black trans lives in environments that centre their bodies – those living, those that have passed, and those that have been forgotten.¨– Studio Voltaire.

Studio Voltaire’s exhibitions programmes have gained an international reputation, offering opportunities for emerging and under-represented artists to realise ambitious new work. The commissions often present an artist’s first solo exhibition in London or bring work by international artists to UK audiences for the first time, alongside occasional archival shows that highlight figures who have been overlooked.
