Ubuntu – I Am Because We Are
The exhibition runs until 12 December 2025, at Camberwell Space, located within Camberwell College of Arts, UAL in South London.
The project is inspired by the African philosophy of Ubuntu, which was popularized by anti-apartheid activists Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela and is rooted in the Bantu and Xhosa traditions of Southern Africa. Ubuntu emphasizes the idea that our humanity is deeply interconnected. The phrase “I am because we are” reflects values of community, collectivism, and shared responsibility, highlighting how our lives are influenced by those around us.
Ubuntu – I Am Because We Are showcases artworks ranging from photography and collage to ceramic tiles and beyond, many of which were developed in collaboration with local schools, businesses, and community members throughout Camberwell, Peckham, and Southwark.

Other highlights include a striking large-scale wall hanging, a furniture design project that explores how chairs contribute to communities, and an immersive VR experience featuring 3D scans of these designs.

Furthermore, a fantastic program of free public workshops is scheduled to take place throughout October, November, and December. These workshops include knitting, writing, tapestry, zine-making, theatre, and music.

The exhibition and workshops are free to attend – booking is required for workshops only
