Copla: a Spanish Cabaret

Jan 18 @ 4:30 pm
£20
Copla is gay Spanish cabaret at The Other Palace theatre in London

Copla is an art form practically unknown in England, yet it is essential to Spain’s cultural and political history and once served as a political tool against repression, first under Franco’s dictatorship and later for Spain’s queer community. The Copla songs channel the queer and migrant experiences in Spain’s early musicals, hitting all the right notes for gay people who love to laugh and cry to divas and their melodramatic music. This cabaret show celebrates queer migrant identity while exposing its pitfalls. This show is written and performed by queer migrant performer Alejandro Postigo who deconstructs the traditional Spanish songs and shares their historical significance for queer collectives, inviting the audience to be part of the dialogue. Through his performance of English Copla and his sharing of his life stories, you’ll witness his rebirth as an alter ego, La Gitana.

★★★★  “If you had asked me what copla was before arriving, I would have shrugged; now I consider myself Postigo’s latest convert” –  Lost in Theatreland

“Masterful and captivating… I am now a devoted fan of Copla!” – The Live Review
