TOMBOY (U)

Gifted French filmmaker Celine Sciamma provocatively explores gender identity with this astonishing film, which never becomes an issue movie due to its intimate perspective.

It centres on a 10-year-old girl (the remarkable Zoe Haran) who introduces herself as a boy to the kids in her new neighbourhood. Roughhousing, sports and even a girlfriend follow, so we can understand why she’s terrified that her secret might be revealed.

The film is gorgeously well-made, with heavy doses of humour and several great characters who completely win us over.

So travelling this journey with them is an unforgettable experience for us too. (8/10)
