A MID-WINTER NIGHT’S DREAM

The divine David Hoyle is about to return with ‘Winter Warmer’s’ at the RVT, so we got Lee Dalloway to pose some questions for the offbeat but on point performer. Of course, you’re never going to get a straightforward Q&A back from Mr Hoyle, and thank Goddess for that…

I’m writing this in a frenzy of activity, as I pack for Liverpool and the fantastic, internationally acclaimed Homotopia Festival 2011, with it’s diverse range of disciplines forged by the queer hand, mind, body, you name it! It’s a great gathering of like-minded people, and the overall effect is one of hope!

Anyhow, back to Lee’s fab questions – both pertinent and personal. The new shows will differ quite a bit from previous ones, as I seem to be in a different headspace at the mo’.

A lot has happened lately that has really caused me to try and stop and have a look. So, different perspectives, perhaps, as we explore some alternatives together. Is there a group therapy aspect to my work? Yes, there is, but we work together. Either way it’s there and I’m looking forward to re-connecting with us all at the RVT.
Dawn Amber-Harvey [AKA Dawn Right Nasty] solicited all the talent for this run. Dawn has her finger on the pulse and knows who’s going on and where.

These amazing people, from Jonathan Kemp to my friend Gerry Potter-Poet, we will proudly be presenting at the RVT during the early winter months I’m hoping that we can all get to Chrimbo strong enough to deal with its nothingness. New rituals should be created.

This national day of furniture sales needs demoting. Let’s follow the seasons more whole-heartedly, especially now, as the idea of food shortages permeates the previously cosy Western mind.

What gets me angry about the world today:

The normalization of perpetual war.

The blind-worship of the hetero-normative “male”. This patriarchal, antique figurine of a sub-species. The normalization of war and its associated ills, like lack of empathy and institutionalized brutality. There’s a difference between abuse and erotic fantasy.

Sometimes, I feel the “male” is just an excuse for insensitivity, selfishness and disassociation. Like hero-worshipping an earlier manifestation of ourselves someway back in our evolutionary past. Maybe it’s a form of unconscious ancestor worship. Either way the “male” edifice is often an obstacle to progress; territorial, parochial, provincial.

Our only hope is adopting trans-consciousness – a mentality that harmonizes rather than divides.

Maybe Chrimbo could be replaced with a ‘Mass Jettisoning of Religion Day’! When all humankind comes together in the spirit of humanity and love unconditionally. I’d like that more than a brandy-laced minced pie.

The recession is one thing on everyone’s minds. It’s affecting people psychologically, as people realize that the rich are gonna keep getting richer and the poor poorer. It’s like millions of people are waking up and becoming aware that we’re all part of a system designed to reward only the few who own everything anyway! The threats that come out of the City of London, i.e. ‘let us award ourselves huge limitless bonuses or we relocate’, are obscene!

As for the riots? I take Darcus Howe’s line that it was an insurrection! We live in a society of mixed messages. It’s OK to kill if authorised by ‘the authorities’ and it’s ok to invade a country uninvited, but not right to take a bottle of water or pair of trainers from a shop.

The military-industrial complex is the most powerful aspect of human life on this planet, not the arts. This is humanity’s tragedy.

We are led by anti-human, anti-love, pro-armaments trade, money-mad morons – all of whom should be publicly executed in Trafalgar Square.

They are an insult to the human race. They’ve had a damn good run for their money and now it’s time to go. Interest in politics and communities has been replaced with iPads, iPhones, game consoles etc. All solo-masturbatory activities that intensify our loneliness, disassociation and uselessness.

Psychologically, a lot of us are lost in this landscape of state sanctioned death and poverty.

We shall overcome!

Love to the QX team and all your readers…
