Personal trainer Tim Walker tells us about his Warrior Workout regime, transforming hardworking city men into ripped warriors using beer barrels and tractor tyres…

QX had an email drop into our inboxes to try out the ‘Warrior Workout’ and of course, who are we to resist such an offer? By the time our turn taking part in the intensive alternative fitness routine came about though, we were feeling pretty weary and the thought of going down to Shoreditch and lifting beer barrels, turning over tractor tyres and hitting things with sledgehammers wasn’t what we had first on our mind. However, twenty minutes into our trial and we were slamming that sledgehammer down on the old tyre, feeling like Jason Bourne as we did so. In short: it was great. And if you’re dubious about the novelty attraction of using different methods to achieve your fitness goals, there’s a large amount of in-gym training too, including weight lifting and boxing. Anyway, don’t take our word for it, read our interview with mastermind behind the programme and personal trainer Tim Walker.

How did you get into personal training?

I think as with most personal trainers the main reason I first got into fitness training was because I loved to exercise, I thought I knew how to get/stay in shape and thus I’d be a great trainer.

Tell us about the Warrior Workout.
The Warrior Workout is designed for, what I like to call, the Guilty Over Achiever or GOA. The GOA is a man who has succeeded in all aspects of his life: he has the car, the house, the job and all the good things that come with it. The only thing lacking is the body to match the achievements. The Warrior Workout is designed to fast track the untrained man to go from average city guy to athletic hero in only 12 weeks. As Evolution of Man we take on twenty “warriors” who are willing to dedicate twelve weeks of their life to creating the body of their dreams. Working on an almost “24/7” basis the twelve warriors drop fat, build muscle and improve every marker of health to leave the program totally in control of their body. I like to think that all the guys who take up the challenge will finish as the complete package and as the man who has everything. Sorry I always get excited when I talk about the program!

What gave you the idea to use things like beer barrels and tractor tyres to improve peoples’ fitness?
I am just a big believer in using the whole body and letting it do what it does best.  Things like lifting beer barrels and flipping tyres have been used for hundreds of years through strongman competitions, resulting in some of the most powerful physiques the world has ever seen. You will never say the same for the luxurious fitness equipment that lets you comfortably exercise on a padded bench whilst Kylie Minogue warbles away in the background.  Of course we still bench press, squat and bicep curl but pulling heavy things and challenging the whole body alongside the usual stuff just forces the fat to drop off to reveal the muscle beneath.

How does it all work? What muscles and strength are people improving with the workouts?
Over the twelve weeks the exact methods used will always be different depending on many factors such as level of fitness, body type and/or goals.  For instance the skinny guy (ectomorph) wanting to put on muscle will perform much more strength related exercises than the larger guy (endomorph), who will do more dynamic exercises such as boxing and circuits. The diets will also vary drastically between clients. Goal setting and measurements take place fortnightly to assess progress and this determines exactly what types of exercises we do.  Sometimes we get into the strongman stuff immediately whereas for other types it takes a month before a “warrior” gets to flip a tire.

For people on the twelve-week courses, have you seen any miracle improvements?
The Warrior Workout is built on the improvements and transformations both from the scrawny to brawny transformation, to the fat to thin stuff.  This year I think we have produced some of the best transformations that I, dare I say it, have ever seen anywhere in such a period of time.  I’ll be putting the new ones up onto the eomfitness.com site so stand by…

And finally, do you do the Warrior Workout yourself?
Yeah I do all aspects of the workout depending on my goals but to be honest I always struggle to push myself as hard as I push the guys on the twelve-week program because I am already pretty much in the shape that I want to be in.  That’s the beauty of the Warrior Workout: it lets you reach your potential and then gives you the knowledge to maintain it or even better it, if you really want to go the extra mile!
