City Road’s den of delights, East Bloc, is turning five years old this Saturday 19th March and celebrating this fact with a barnstormer of a party! We caught up with promoter Martyn Fitzgerald about the last five years, the next five years and what’s happening this weekend.

What’s the most insane thing that’s happened at East Bloc in the last five years?

Too many to mention but one in particular involves a celebrity (who will remain anonymous – we’re the soul of discretion) having to be lead out the back door.

What’s been your favourite moment?

Loads of special moments! It’s always been a great crowd at East Bloc filled with friends and family. All of the birthdays have been amazing, as will this one.

Half a decade! How do you think East Bloc has changed?

Well, it looks a lot different for a start! It was a sleazy private member’s club with flock wallpaper and chintz couches when we got it. Since then we’ve turned into a favourite homo hangout and while the club is now five years old… we all look FIFTEEN years older.

What have been your favourite East Bloc parties?

Blocheads, Dish, Songs of Praise, Gutterslut, MWF2E, Handsome, Motherload, Wut? Club to name a few.

If you could invite five dream celebs down to party at the weekend, who would they be?

Kate Moss, Lindsay Lohan, June Brown, Alan Carr and Judy Finnegan. Party girls.

What do you envision for the next five years of East Bloc?
Another five years of great, late night queer clubbing in East London.

Anything you want to say to the people who’ve been popping down to the Bloc for the last five years?

Thank you for all your support the past five years. With the closure of so many iconic gay venues we really do appreciate your support and will continue to deliver a great LGBT space for you to party safe and party hard. Come celebrate with us this Saturday!

• High Five: East Bloc’s Big Birthday Bash is on Saturday 19th March at East Bloc, (217 City Road, EC1V 1JN) 11pm – 6am.

• Email eastbloclondon@gmail.com for free guestlist before 12:30am. Otherwise £5 before midnight/£10 after.
