Discosodoma

Discosodoma is turning two! We had a chat with promoters Ilias and Stathis about their rapidly-growing toddler.

Happy birthday Discosodoma! You guys have packed the last two years full to the brim with incredible parties, beautiful music and guests that have seen us sweating up a storm in the laser basement. If you had to pick out a few highlights from those two years, what would they be?

Some might say that the best party moments are the ones you don’t remember, which is partially true, but looking back especially during the last year, we have had some great milestones! Our first warehouse party at Bloc in July was a very important highlight for us; it was our chance to dip our toes in what it takes to work on a bigger production and get a glimpse of future possibilities. It was tough work but the atmosphere and music paid off.

On top of that list, of course, is our first venture in Athens with Fantastic Man (Love On The Rocks, AUS). Everything just clicked; the music, the space, the crowd. It was one of those parties that you didn’t want to end. Mehmet Aslan was also a highlight for us due to his very unique style of music and earned the dancers with his set. Last but not least, from our last party in February, where A Man To Pet was serving phallic shaped vegetables to cute boys on the floor as Valentine’s gifts.

Discosodoma has become known for your amazing artwork – can you tell us a little bit about the artist and where the inspiration for your mind-bending posters comes from?

While we were looking for a new artistic direction for our visuals, we had a Tarot reading for fun with a friend at home and when the Judgement Day card fell on the table, we instantly knew we wanted to go down that path. Therefore we brought on board John Philip Sage, a great friend and a very talented artist and illustrator. By giving him keywords for every poster, he would come up with a custom design based on a Tarot card and build a trippy narrative out of it.

Which is your favourite poster to date?

It’s always the most recent one, and this one represents the Sun with our very own twist.

If you had to sum up the last two years of Discosodoma in one track, what would it be?

DJ Koze – XTC! It sums up quite nicely two years of ecstatic partying and decadent dance floor moments.

For your second birthday, you are welcoming the incredible Tornado Wallace (Animals Dancing/Melbourne). Can you tell us why you wanted to book him specifically for your birthday celebration?

He is one of our favourite up-and-coming producers to date. His sound represents the same vision we have about electronic dance music: fun, thunderous and ecstatic.

Can you tell us a bit about your other special guests for your birthday?

Of course! We are very honoured to have Dan Beaumont and Jonjo Jury with us, who have been major staples to London’s queer dance scene. Then, Joe Roberts, who’s one of the best music selectors in the queer scene. We always look for new, interesting sounds through his show, Ecstasy Garage Disco, Vangelis, who runs one of the most successful alternative music blogs, La.Ga.Sta and Dream Traxx, a newly-discovered gem with a very eclectic vinyl collection.

It’s a line-up made of good friends and talent we admire and we couldn’t be happier to have them on board.
