Celebrated cabaret collective The Cocoa Butter Club to launch dazzling residency at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern.

There’s nothing quite like an evening basking in the excellence of a Cocoa Butter Club cabaret night. Each act brings a fresh new energy to the stage. They never fail to excite. Having launched back in 2016, the Cocoa Butter Club has paved the way in providing a platform for performers of colour. Taking the scene by storm, they’ve set a new standard in centring POC voices and stories, pushing back against being tokenised, misrepresented and disregarded. In a compelling move, this month they’ve announced a residency at famed queer venue The Royal Vauxhall Tavern. Grab a tub and get ready to lather up!

In just four short years, the collective has performed on more than a few impressive stages. They’ve trodden the boards at the Roundhouse, the Underbelly Festival and Mighty Hoopla just to name a few. Once a staple at the now-closed Her Upstairs, Camden, they’ve found an accessible new home at the Tavern. Some of the scene’s biggest names have previously been featured on the Cocoa roster, with Travis Alabanza, Lilly Snatchdragon and Rhys’ Pieces just to name a few.

Welcoming The Cocoa Butter Club to the hallowed halls of the Tavern, CEO and Managing director James Lindsay shared:

“We love their passion and integrity and welcome their commitment to promoting the values of diversity and inclusion we embrace at Royal Vauxhall Tavern. The Cocoa Butter Club strengthens the amazing 2020 programme of events we already have confirmed.”

So, what’s in the works? Well, launching on Wednesday, 26th February is a program of seven scintillating productions. Five of these productions will be showcase evenings, highlighting the work of up-and-comers making exciting new works, alongside established Cocoa Butter favourites. The other two will be “Superclub” events, bringing together mixed mediums to create an edifying club experience. Bringing together film, music and performance in one knock-out evening.

Talking about the residency, producer Cassie Leon shared her excitement to “decolonise and re-moisturise” the cabaret scene with this scintillating string of performances. Founder and curator of The Cocoa Butter Club, Sadie Sinner The Songbird, shared:

“I’m over the moon to be working The RVT, a pairing that is so appropriate given that, like us, they are a quintessentially queer institution who provides a secure home for incredibly unique stage art. We are so excited about the accommodations for access that The RVT are prepared to make, all with the aim of accommodating various performers who all have different access requirements, overall uniting our shared company goals of cabaret for all!”.

The Cocoa Butter Club launch their residency on Wednesday, 26th February at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, 372 Kennington Lane, Vauxhall SE11 5HY.
