As George Redwood’s career has progressed, his powerful voice and evocative lyrics have gained national attention on BBC One’s All Together Now. By 2022, his music has resonated worldwide, accumulating an impressive 6 million streams on Spotify.
George was kind enough to take time out from his heavy schedule to talk to QX about his latest release, his artistry, and the success he is enjoying.
Hello George. Thank you for meeting me. Let’s talk about your latest release first, your album Better Than Nothing, a concept album themed around the life cycle of a relationship. How do you think being a gay man has influenced the lyrics of this particular album?
Being a gay man has definitely shaped the emotional depth and perspective of the album. Relationships in the LGBTQ+ community can come with unique challenges and layers—sometimes there’s more vulnerability, a need to break down societal barriers, or a different kind of longing for acceptance. Those feelings naturally found their way into my writing. I wanted the lyrics to be authentic and relatable while showing that, at the core, love is universal.
This is also the first time I’ve sung openly about a “boy” in my lyrics. I usually write music that’s more gender-neutral, but to make this album as honest and authentic as possible, I knew I had to fully embrace my truth. I’m lucky enough to be in a wonderful, long-term relationship with my beautiful partner, and this album reflects both the things I’ve learned from this, my first real relationship, and observations I’ve made as an outsider in other people’s relationships.
While the album is deeply personal, I also wanted it to be universal—something anyone could connect with, regardless of sexuality. At its core, Better Than Nothing explores emotions and experiences we’ve all felt, like love, heartbreak, hope, and self-discovery. These are human experiences that transcend gender or orientation, and that’s something I was very conscious of when creating the album.
What do you think it says about gay relationships?
The album captures the universal highs and lows of relationships—something everyone can relate to—but it also emphasises resilience, self-discovery, and the beauty of genuine connection. Gay relationships, like any other, are rooted in love, trust, and navigating challenges together, and I think the album portrays that authentically.
There’s also an underlying sense of celebration in the storytelling—of being able to live and love openly, which is a privilege that hasn’t always been possible for everyone in the LGBTQ+ community. I wanted to honour that freedom while highlighting the humanity we all share in relationships.
Historically, LGBTQ+ relationships have often been misunderstood or unfairly stereotyped, and I hope this album helps break down some of those outdated perceptions. At its core, this project shows that love, no matter who it’s between, is about connection, vulnerability, and the willingness to grow with someone else. I wanted to create something that celebrates LGBTQ+ relationships for what they truly are—just as rich, complex, and meaningful as any other.
Ultimately, I hope listeners take away the message that love is love, and the experiences explored on this album are universal, regardless of sexuality or background.
Better Than Nothing has been well received and is doing very well in the charts. Tell us how that feels and how much of a breakthrough it is for you.
It feels absolutely incredible! Seeing Better Than Nothing debut at #5 on the UK Pop Album iTunes Chart and #11 on the General Chart was truly a dream come true. As of today, the album has been streamed over 135,000 times and has been met with amazing support and positive feedback. For an independent artist like me, this kind of success feels surreal—something I could have only dreamed of back when I was recording covers in a tiny studio all those years ago.
What makes it even more special isn’t just the numbers—it’s the connection with listeners. I’ve been overwhelmed by messages from people sharing their favourite tracks and telling me how much certain tracks are resonating with them. Hearing that these songs are resonating, whether they’re helping someone through a difficult time or inspiring self-reflection, is incredibly heartwarming.
The album isn’t just about love—it also carries messages of self-love, resilience, and mental health awareness. These themes are so personal to me, and knowing they’re making an impact is the most rewarding part of this journey. It’s a huge milestone, and it’s given me even more motivation to keep creating and sharing music that connects with people. I’m so grateful for every single person who’s supported the album—it means the world to me.
You started writing music at a very early age. Who were the musicians that inspired you then, and who’s at the top of that list now?
Growing up, I was inspired by artists who could tell a story with their music—people like Adele, Beyoncé, and Ryan Tedder. They taught me how to blend raw emotion with great melodies. Now, my inspirations have expanded to include artists like Ben Platt, Sia, Chappell Roan, and Benedict Cork for their ability to combine vulnerability and vocal power. And I’m constantly inspired by emerging talents like Sophie Griffiths and Natalie Gray. Their determination and undisputed talents are nothing short of inspiring.
Have you been on the dance floor yet when a track of yours has played?
I have, but only once or twice—and I think my friends secretly requested it just to embarrass me! But honestly, it’s an unreal experience, and I absolutely love it. Hearing my tracks like Say My Name or some of the dance collaborations I’ve done, especially with Colin Crooks, in a club setting is electric. Those songs were created with that kind of energy in mind, so seeing people on the dance floor vibing to them is the ultimate reward.
Venues like Heaven, G-A-Y London, and Freedom (my personal favourite) in London are dream locations to hear my music played, and I’m always thrilled when DJs pick up on my tracks. What’s truly fulfilling is knowing that as a gay artist in EDM—a genre that doesn’t always have as much mainstream LGBTQ+ representation—I’m contributing to a growing visibility. To do well in this space feels like a huge accomplishment, and I’m proud to be flying that flag.
One of the most amazing things is when people send me videos of my tracks being played in clubs around the world. Seeing crowds dancing and enjoying music I’ve helped create is beyond gratifying. It happens often in places like China and Taiwan—countries I’ve never even been to, but where they’re connecting with my music in such a big way.
What projects are coming up, and what’s keeping you busy?
2025 is shaping up to be a huge year for me, not just in terms of music releases but also in representing and celebrating the LGBTQ+ community. My latest single, Be Alright, has just dropped in collaboration with Garnic and with the support of Cheerful Music, kicking off an exciting new era. With more singles lined up for February, March, and April, all leading to two EPs later this year, there’s so much to look forward to.
One project particularly close to my heart is one I’ve nicknamed Project Polari. It’s an EP deeply rooted in LGBTQ+ history and explores themes of oppression, the progress we’ve made as a community, and the work still needed to ensure equality and acceptance for everyone. This project honours those who came before us—the pioneers who fought for our rights and gave us the freedom to live as openly as we do today. They deserve more respect and recognition, and Project Polari aims to celebrate their legacy while showcasing the stories and experiences of our diverse community. I’m hoping to collaborate with other LGBTQ+ artists to authentically represent these narratives and make this project a powerful tribute to our history and our future.
I’ve also already scheduled performances at several Pride events across the UK, and I’m beyond excited to bring this new music to life on stage. It’s a privilege to celebrate love, identity, and unity with audiences who truly understand the importance of these messages. 2025 is going to be unforgettable, and I can’t wait to share it all with you!
