This is a rare opportunity to see a major new work centring East Asian voices in London theatre, exploring universal themes of family, patriarchy, and queer identity through a darkly comic lens. The hope is that it will spark dialogue across communities and offer a fresh perspective in the contemporary theatre landscape.

My name is Susu, a queer Chinese theatre-maker based in London.

The Night Before Wedding Day is my debut stage play, a story about love, performance, and the quiet act of breathing under the weight of culture.

The play unfolds on the night before a wedding.

A bride prepares for “the happiest day of her life,” surrounded by friends, family, and the truths no one dares to speak aloud.

But this story is not only about a wedding; it is about the unbreakable cycle within East Asian families.
Under patriarchy, women are taught to be perfect, obedient, and kind.

Marriage often appears to be their only escape from the family, only to reveal itself as another form of continuation.

For East Asian men, especially queer men, masculinity becomes both the thing they despise and the force that shapes them.

They learn to stay silent, to hide, to become the version of themselves that others can accept.

In families like these, everyone wants to leave, yet they are somehow trapped.

This is a true story, one that happened around me, one that never really ended.

It’s about shame, desire, and freedom.

And about that quiet, trembling question we all ask ourselves in the dark:
“What is it that I truly long for?”

The Night Before Wedding Day runs from 27 – 29 October 2025 at Theatro Technis, 26 Crowndale Road, London NW1 1TT, United Kingdom.
