Celebrating the biggest moments of the year with the Carpet Burn crew…
DJ Martyn Fitzgerald
My highlight of the year was at the Carpet Burn PWL party when one of our regulars dragged-up as Doner Kebab – ‘Donna Summer’ – and sang ‘I Don’t Wanna Get Hurt’. I think the DJ had sped it up slightly and… well, let’s just say it was an interesting rendition.
Away from clubland, the Olympics and Paralympics were pretty special, no? We’d had all that shit with the riots and then London bounced back and really pulled it off. The best moment was the Queen picking her fingernails and looking totally bored as Team GB streamed past.
DJ Simon Kilner
My highlight this year has been my gradual transition into my bitch weave, high heeled, scary make-up wearing alter ego ‘Jackie’ over this year’s Carpet Burns. I can hardly call myself ‘Butch Queen first time in Drag at a Ball’ after the dubious ‘Kylie night’ gold hot pants, and the more recent leather skirt ensemble with full muffin top at the Tastiest Tranny Ball! I LOVED the Tranny Ball! The contestants SERVED everything from fishy realness to just plain crazy that night! That and our cheeky midweek PWL Hit Factory cancellation party with Johnny Kalifornia were my fave nights.
A personal highlight of the year was falling in love with my soul mate on that long hot balmy summer we enjoyed together… Oh no wait… maybe that didn’t happen!
Mark from Readers Wifes
I suppose the ‘Wifes highlight of 2012 would have to be our Gay Shame night back in the summer. Apocalyptic rain, naturally, and yet the RVT was rammed. RAMMED, inside and out. We gave away umbrellas and waterproof ponchos at the door and that was a good job because the majority of people were dancing outside in the deluge – we’re lucky – we have the best crowd in the world.
Also, the Olympics was fine! In my day job I was given the onerous task of looking after the official records for the Opening and Closing ceremonies and getting them into the charts. No sleep for three months – I really mean that – but it was worth it. Briefly, London was a bit like Narnia, even if it feels like a dream now. Are we the same city we were?
