One of the Kazbar in Clapham’s biggest attractions is the wonderful soul singer Angie Brown. Ahead of her upcoming gig at the Kaz, we catch up with Mrs Brown herself to find out a little bit more about her…

Tell us a little about Angie Brown and your music.

When I started out singing, I was a session singer. So that meant I could turn up and sing mainly the chorus’ on various songs. Fortunately in the 90’s when ‘House/club’ music was massive, music producers wanted big voices with tinges of soul and gospel in it. It’s a very American sound and has a southern flavour to it and I found that I could replicate it just like they did. So the house music sessions very quickly came my way. Since then, I have made a name for myself and have a following with the clubbing industry!

What is your connection to the Kazbar? Why is it special to you?

I love the Kazbar, I worked for Craig (the owner) in September, at his b’day party and I played on PA for him before that… And I thought that we really got on well, and we hit it off that night. Also I grew up around Clapham, Brixton and Stockwell, so Clapham High Street is alive and well within my memories as a child. I had singing lessons as a teen in Clapham, and I learnt to swim at Clapham Manor Baths.

What can we expect from your upcoming set? What kind of crowd do you usually get?

I usually get a great reception for the crowd that I am playing to, because I know what clubbers want, but this night will have a slightly different flavour, because we’ll be championing underground DISCO on our PDF nights, and it’ll be all new to me I’m afraid, so I’ll just have to feel it and have no particular expectations for the night, except that it’ll be funky and fun!

And finally, where can we hear your music for someone who’s yet to hear the Angie Brown experience?

You can hear all the releases whether good or bad under Angie Brown at iTunes, and you can find out a lot more about me, if you visit my website, which is www.angiebrown.com There are also loads of various gigs and Pride events, so a newbie can get familiar with my style. Hopefully I’ll see you all down there, for a brilliant Sunday night out in South London.

• Angie Brown will be hosting ‘Pure Disco Foundation’ at the Kazbar, 50 Clapham High Street, SW4 7UL on Sunday 3rd November.
