Shura – ‘Touch’

Shura’s ‘Touch’ stands in good stead to become one of the songs of the summer.

An actress and nu-wave electro-soul singer, Shura has been recording and releasing her own music for a few years now and building up a devoted following in London and online. Previously collaborating with DJ Hiatus, she’s now going it alone herself and the hypnotic beauty of Touch perfectly suits the shining sun, cruising in cars with the windows down, or a gently cider-laced laze in the park on a responsibility-free Saturday afternoon.

Lyrically though, the deceptively simplistic words hold a deeper emotional tug. ‘There’s a love between us but something’s changed and I don’t know why,’ Shura’s breathy, enticing vocals murmur in the ear, ‘and all I want to do is go home with you, but I know I’m out of my mind.’ Anyone who’s been in an awkward situation with an ex-lover or past flame, where you want to touch them but – for whatever reason – know you shouldn’t, can appreciate the poignancy of this message.

Supported by one of the most fantastic self-made videos we’ve had the pleasure of watching, featuring girls kissing boys and girls kissing girls and boys kissing boys, the appeal of ‘Touch’ is widespread and pan-sexualities. An up-close of an ultramarine eye opening is adroitly placed in the visual narrative to encompass a strange amount of feeling, and rarely has watching strangers kissing been made to seem so sexily sensual. Shura as an artist and music-maker seems all about pursuing the real emotional truth of life, and with ‘Touch’ she’s pinned it to a tee. This deserves to be huge.
