Found in a fortune cookie in Montreal’s Chinatown and flown over to London four years ago, BAMBOO HERMANN (pictured) is a East London queer clubland scenester. Promoter and resident DJ at SHOES (Vogue Fabrics, The Waiting Room) and TRANSISTER (Resistance Gallery, Vogue Fabrics), we asked the guys at HOMODROP (Dalston Superstore) to catch up with Bamboo for a cheeky chat before gracing the decks of Superstore once again on March 5th
Who is your favourite producer?
There are so many good producers out there… I have a preference for producers rooted in the sound of old school Detroit and Chicago house and disco, such as Kim Ann Foxman, Hannah Holland, Mystic Bill, Green Velvet, Twirl… Maurice Fulton especially is a reference to me (he produced Gipsy Woman by Crystal Waters back in the 90’s.) I love his dark twist on disco and afro beats. He produced two of my all time favourite albums with Japanese singer MU, a wicked blend of samba beats with punkish, broken English vocals. More recently I’ve really enjoyed the tracks coming out of Lobster Boy records, a London bass label, with producers such as Redlight, Melé, Mak & Pasteman & New York Transit Authority.
Describe HOMODROP in 5 words:
Happy. Friendly. Unpretentious. Groovy. Homos!
If you had a time machine and could visit any dance floor anywhere, at any time, where would you want to do dancing?
I would love to travel back in time and party at “Le Palace” in Paris in the early 80’s. It’s to me the ultimate fantasy of Parisian decadent cosmopolitan glamour… “Le Palace” was this legendary theatre turned night-club where the likes of Grace Jones, Serge Gainsbourg, Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, Yves St-Laurent, Thierry Mugler, etc. would party. It was known as a glamorous yet inclusive place that threw rich, poor, gay, straight and all races together.
What’s your favourite track at the moment?
“U Won’t C Me” by Mystic Bill on Snuff Trax. Lyrical and groovy… Stuck on repeat.
The HOMODROP crew is so glad to have you on board again. Tell us which track you really want to play?
“Good Groove” by Playin 4’ the City. A house track with a hint of disco and a French touch… It doesn’t get more HOMODROP than this!
