Cabaret – La Voix

The drag singing sensation is been cruising with the best of them!

There’s nothing timorous about drag musical diva La Voix. If it isn’t BIG, she isn’t interested. And by that we mean performance of course…her thunderous vocals and onstage charm have been delighting audiences for years.

Currently performing aboard a cruise ship and preparing for the London leg of her UK tour, this week La Voix talked showbiz, reality TV, and cruising for trade with Jason Reid.

It’s ages since we last chatted. How’s the showbiz life?

Life is fabulous. Lots and lots of travel and performing in amazing new places in the UK and beyond. My vegan driver Joanne has been clocking up the miles; she often gets her Birkenstocks stuck under the accelerator and we fly down that motorway. At the moment I’m performing on a cruise ship.

Ooh, how glam! What can you see in front of you right now?

I can see mount Etna towering above me as I sip this morning coffee in Sicily. I’m celebrating my 20th cruise on this particular voyage, travelling through Italy and Greece.

Do you enjoy working cruises?

I adore cruises. I think I get this from my sister, Jane. The ships, the destinations, and the huge theatres are just spectacular. I often recreate my Britain’s Got Talent entrance; arriving on a lift up through the floor (winched by Joanne who is a strong girl and good with anything mechanical). The onboard audiences are always so vibrant and I get to work alongside legends like Olivia Newton John, Vanessa Williams and Jennifer Holliday.

And plenty of hot trade?

Unfortunately, after my shows, as you can imagine, there isn’t time for an onboard romance for a glamorous woman like me, even on a ship full of gay men. But they are at it morning, noon and night. The staff are no better, always barging into passengers’ cabins. At one point there was seamen in every single cabin on the ship.

Would you do another reality/talent show?

Never say never. Strictly would be nice, to wear a fabulous ball gown and be swept off my feet. I was asked to be part of Celebrity 5 Go Caravanning but I suggested my friend Sonia instead. She loves caravanning.

I know you’re a huge Cher fan, so what do you think of her ABBA covers?

I simply adore the fact that she is doing this and still recording music in her 70’s. We’ve needed something camp and quirky in the charts for a long time. Also, a UK tour? Gimme gimme gimme tickets!

Will you be replicating any of the tracks?

I’ve already added my own take on Cher doing Abba to my new show. Sung live of course.

What other music are you listening to?

I’m getting back into one of my favourite singers, Paloma Faith. I’m so exited to be performing with her at the London Palladium on 30th September for the Future Dreams charity. I also had the pleasure of seeing Rita Ora in Henley recently and she was amazing.

What can we expect from your Underbelly show?

Behind the scenes stories of my time on Britain’s Got Talent; celebrity hot gossip from when I was PA to Pamela Anderson and David Gest; how I got to sing in the Ab Fab Movie, and what vegans are really like to travel with. Then throw all this into the mix with a live band delivering high-energy songs from Shirley Bassey, Liza Minnelli, Cher, Alison Moyet and Kylie to name just a few. It’s essentially a biographical look at my life AND my biggest show to date

It’s been quite some time since you’ve performed on the queer scene. Will you return in the future?

I’ve been very busy performing for the Prides around the UK & Europe, and with my touring and cruising commitments I find I have about four minutes free in any one day. However I have asked the fabulous team that book my theatre tour to ensure we have venues close to London and Brighton so people have the opportunity to come along and see the full show. They get to see a very different show in the theatres and one that I think is worth the ticket cost.

Hello La Voix is on Monday 10th September at Underbelly Festival Southbank, Belvedere Road Coach Park, London SE1 8XX
