Up On The Pole – Gay Men’s Dance Company get sliding

GMDC Gay Men's Dance Company

Following their spectacular Halloween Pole Dancing Extravaganza, we caught up with the lovely boys of the Gay Men’s Dancing Company to hear all about it.

Saturday night looked WILD! Tell us about where the idea for the evening came from.

Thanks! We’ve been running Pole dancing classes for years now, we manage to get them involved in our big performances, but with so many talented members who work so hard, I wanted to give them a platform that could really show them off. Also, if you had the opportunity to create a male pole dancing club night, why wouldn’t you….?

EXACTLY. What was the evening’s highlight for you?

Well, the real highlight for us, it’s pretty cheesy, but spending the day with all the guys, watching them rehearse, work together, help each other etc. Then having more of our GMDC members turn up to watch & support, there was so much love in that room. My other highlight would be when we put on NERDs ‘Lapdance’ and all the dancers grabbed a Pole or a person and just went to town living our best stripper lives.

There’s a perception that pole dancing is a women’s thing. Why should more men get into pole dancing?

I’ve spent my whole life doing physical activity, other than Gymnastics there is no better full body work out than pole dancing. It uses muscles most people don’t even know exist, it’s largely calisthenics type training. It works with flexibility as well as strength. It gives you a great understanding of your body. Plus it’s fun as you get to dance & looks really fucking cool. This has absolutely nothing to do with gender. But anyone who wants to increase strength & flexibility in a fun way, Pole Dancing is the answer, and again, looks so cool!

Pole dancing still feels rather scandalous, why do you think that is?

I think although it is changing, there’s still a massive stigma around it, as it’s most famous for being in seedy strip clubs. Sadly, I think this image is worse for women involved in Pole Dancing than it is for men. But if you go to any class, you can very quickly realise how much work it takes to be able to do it well, nothing scandalous about that. But obviously it can also be very sexy & slutty too, that’s why most of our members love it more!

What advice would you give a gay guy looking to polish up his pole moves?

Come join our classes, Thursday in Battersea or Saturday in Old Street. Age, fitness etc is irrelevant, anyone can Pole. It helps build confidence as well as everything else & we have such a lovely group of members who will make you feel welcome & help you.

We hear you have a big Christmas extravaganza lined up. What can we expect to see in the festive season?

We do indeed. Sunday 8th December @ Infernos in Clapham. Tickets on sale through OutSavvy. It’s a variety show, with a Xmas theme obviously. We’ll have a cast of 100-130 of our members from all of our classes, Pole, Musical Theatre, Heels, Voguing, Ballroom, Musical Theatre, etc. It’ll be very festive, fun, exciting, sexy, moving & inspiring. Plus soon as we’re done we have a massive party. So I hope you guys are gonna come & join us & all your readers are invited too. Tickets are £15 if you buy now
