The Little Book of Pride

This Pride Month saw the publication of ‘The Little Book of Pride’, by Lewis Laney (Published by Dog ‘n’ Bone/CICO Books). The book was originally planned for release at the end of the month but after early online interest and great pre-order numbers Laney made a plea to his publisher to release the book sooner, so that people had the book during Pride Month. “With all Pride events being cancelled this year, I thought it seemed right to get the book out sooner and get it in people’s hands during Pride month. Instead of marching in the streets  and partying in the parks perhaps people can use the book to learn a little history about Pride and queer culture” says Lewis.

The book – which became a number one bestseller in the ‘LGBTQ book for young adults’ category on Amazon when it was released this week – is a concise look at everything people need to know about Pride and includes the history, the key people involved and some of the best known Pride events around the world. “Last year saw the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots and this year sees the 50th anniversary of some of the first organised Pride parades in the USA.
“I wrote the book, primarily with young adult readers in mind,” he added.
“I wanted there to be a friendly and accessible read on LGBTQ+ culture that a young person might find interesting and not feel intimidated to pick up.
“I went to school when Section 28 was in place, which made it pretty much illegal for teachers and schools to talk about gay issues – let alone have a book about them in the library.”

Lewis has decided to donate some of his author fees to small LGBTQ+ charities and prides in smaller towns who  might be struggling this year in light of Covid19. The book is available at Waterstones, on hive.co.uk and at many small local independent bookshops.
