What is Lesbian Visibility Week and Day of Visibility?

The show takes place on the final day of Lesbian Visibility Week, a week dedicated to increasing the visibility of lesbian, bisexual, queer women, and non-binary people within the LGBTQ+ community.

The acronym LGBTQ+ refers to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, with the “+” encompassing a broader range of gender identities and sexual orientations.

The positioning of the “L” at the beginning of LGBTQ+ is often linked to historical recognition of lesbian activism during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s. During this period, many lesbians were involved in caregiving, advocacy, fundraising, and support efforts for those affected, particularly gay and bisexual men who faced significant stigma and barriers to healthcare.

“Comedy is a means of bringing people together and providing a shared social experience.”

Importance of Lesbian Visibility

Research and advocacy groups have highlighted that LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary people are frequently underrepresented in media and research, and may face disparities in areas such as healthcare access, safety, and mental health outcomes. Visibility initiatives aim to address these gaps by promoting awareness and inclusion.
