Today, Opening Doors have sadly announced permanent closure on February 29, 2024, citing “ongoing financial challenges, ultimately resulting in insolvency” as the reason for the closure. Opening Doors first opened its doors to people over 50 in 2016.
Bridget Symonds, CEO, stated, “Despite the relentless efforts of our Board of Trustees and staff to secure a sustainable future for our work, the current economic environment has significantly impacted our funding sources, leaving us unable to continue.”
Opening Doors will cease on March 1 2024. They are looking for alternative support for their members, and members will have the details communicated to them directly.
Bridget said, “Our legacy is one of pride, awareness and a foundational platform for future advocacy. Our work has not only highlighted the unique challenges older LGBTQ+ individuals face but also fostered a community of support and recognition. Closing during LGBTQ+ History Month reminds us of the resilience and courage within our community. We urge everyone to carry on this spirit of support and advocacy, inspiring future efforts to combat isolation and uplift older generations.”
The announcement concluded with a heartfelt thank you to all those who had contributed their hard work and gave endless support to Opening Doors.
