JULIASAYS

Discerning scene musings from the princess of East London!

The world of nightlife can be a world of escapism…in more recent times it’s become a place to share ideas and concepts. I went to see the film all about Studio 54 the other night, a club which existed for a mere couple of years in the late 70’s but created a hedonistic template for clubs of the future which still exists today in some shape or form.

It’s not only an interesting account of celebrity and decadence, but a glimpse inside Studio 54, which was full of spectacular ideas that go into creating a club ambience which is still with us today – that’s if you’ve got the budget!

This week, comedic drag star Myra DuBois puts in an appearance. MYRA: 10 at The Clapham Grand on Thursday 12th July is for one night only. It’s a big show celebrating 10 years in the biz with all the DuBois trimmings, wit and charm! Her live band The Spiders In Bras put in a guest appearance and it all kicks off at 8pm.

Over at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern on Friday 13th July the Female Masculinity Appreciation Society invite you to an evening of, well, just that FMAS #18 is where you can ‘dress to impress’, ‘ show off your dance moves’ and ‘admire the setting and each other’…plus get into the arm wrestling competition at 9pm! DJ’s till 3am from Hug The DJ and Jo Bunny.

The Glory takes over the River Stage 2018 at the National Theatre on the Southbank from Friday 13th to Sunday 15th July for The Glory Weekend. OMG lots going on, including highlights from Jonny Woo’s UN-ROYAL VARIETY, Lipsync 1000 and John Sizzle’s Disney Hour! Check theglory.co for the finer details because there’s so much going on you don’t want to miss and it’s all free!

It’s that time of the month! BUM.P // Summer Royalty on Saturday 14th July at Dalston Superstore. On the DJ roster me (Princess Julia) and Jeffrey Hinton take over the sweaty basement! And the bar shows off the DJ selections of Kate Bones, Max Allen and Mark-Ashley Dupé till 3am.

The underground scene is alive and with us in the form of Transister who present SCENE at Cell 200, 3 Vale Royal on Saturday 14th July 11pm till 7am! Forward-thinking electronic dance night with a hedonistic atmosphere, with music from the sensational Adriana Bradford, HALO-IS, Tom and Jarod.

Sketchsesh is back at The Glory on Monday 16th July. It’s one of my fave things to do…grab some pencils and paints and have a go at life drawing from 7-9pm. It costs £12 and all the materials you need are laid out for you. This particular class is fast gaining cult recognition and even been featured in iD mag so come down for some art therapy!

By the way, I’m back at the Retro Bar this coming Tuesday 17th July with another round of Carry On Quizzing at 8pm. It’s a LOL evening with Heidi Heelz on duties till 11pm.

There’s a film night with screenings galore at Fontaines, 176 Stoke Newington Road with The Wild One and Scorpio Rising on Wednesday 18th July. Plus cult club night Lobotomy Room Goes to the Movies with a ‘free to see’ double bill starting at 8.30pm.
