In a rare bit of good news for sexual health services, the NHS have agreed to give extra funding to the PrEP trial, doubling the amount of people who can access it. AMENDMENT: While the NHS agreed to funding, it’s still dependant on the Trial Oversight Board agreeing to it later this month.

There are currently 13,000 people involved and the NHS’s extra funding will allow another 13,000 to take part. There’s been massive demand for access to PrEP since the trials started in 2017. It’s also thought to be largely responsible for new UK HIV diagnoses reaching an all time low.

Will Nutland, co-founder of PrEPster said: “It became clear very early on that demand for the Trial would rapidly outstrip the places available.”

“We know of people who have been turned away from Trial sites and then gone on to contract HIV. Given all the international evidence on the efficacy of PrEP it’s the right move for places on the IMPACT Trial in England to be significantly increased, and PrEPster welcomes today’s commitment from NHS England.”

To find out more about how you can take part, head to prepimpacttrial.org.uk or ask about it in your local sexual health clinic.
