Lockdown Cabaret: Mary Mac Live in Lanza – Every Sunday

Despite being locked down in Lanzarote with her beau and beautiful dog, QX Cabaret Awards winning drag artist and star of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Mary Mac is still furnishing the virtual world with her brilliant talents via Facebook Live. Jason Reid caught up with Mary to find out how lockdown life is treating her…

How are you coping with lockdown?

I’m very grateful that I got back here to Lanzarote, so I’m in lockdown with Brett and Apple. Our days are varied. We do as much as we can to keep active. We’re working on panto at the moment, and our live-streams at the weekend. We’re also watching other queens on social media, doing quizzes, and just trying not to drive each other mad.

Your lockdown streams are fantastic and very popular. Have you settled into them, and are you finding it strange not having an audience there in front of you?

I honestly thought I would hate the online streams. I didn’t think I’d get into them at all. But I’m really starting to enjoy them, and people have been lovely. The response has been great. It’s been fun getting Brett involved as well. And it’s great that we can still all be together. It shows how amazing the community is that we all still support each other as much as we can even when we can’t actually get out and see each other.

Have you been checking out anyone else’s shows?

I have dipped in and out of other peoples live-streams. I’m really enjoying Lola Lasagne’s quiz on a Wednesday. I do quite like a quiz in general. And, of course, my lovely sisters, Myra DuBois, Miss Jason and Sandra. I enjoy watching them on a Sunday. Especially Sandra, who I think just thinks she’s on a a FaceTime call, but that’s why we love Sandra – it’s absolute carnage, as is her show live in any venue throughout the country. Everyone’s doing a fantastic effort of keeping everyone’s spirits up. It’s brilliant. Massive love to all the queens.

What are you missing most right now?

What I’m missing most is, just having a laugh with everyone. Each time you’d turn up to a gig you didn’t know who you’d see, and there was always someone with a story or some news to catch up on. And just the general banter and naughtiness of working with other queens, and of course the incredible crowds that turn out to venues. It’s always really special to get that interaction. I’m missing my family, of course, and the cast of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.

Do you think your outlook will change post lockdown?

I haven’t really thought about it actually; it seems a long way away at the moment. I’m very grateful for what I’ve achieved already in my career, and I’m looking forward to what comes next. I’m right bang in the middle of a UK tour with Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, and I can’t wait to get back to that. Plus all the gigs I’m doing throughout the country and what’s to come in 2021.

Will we see you on Drag Race UK soon?

Who knows? I used to say never, but now I’ll say never say never, because life changes quite quickly…through a sneeze, apparently.

Mary Mac’s Lanza Lockdown Live is every Sunday at 5.30pm on Facebook.
