Trans artist and viral sensation, Mila Jam (she/her), made a stand outside one of the most recognisable locations in the world today with a powerful message: ‘Stop Killing Us’. The message draws attention to transphobia and offers a response to the rising rates of trans femicide around the world. Transphobic hate crimes have quadrupled over the last 5 years in the UK according to the *BBC (The BBC itself is at the centre of a row over transpobia).
The stand against transphobia follows Mila Jam’s recent partnership with global music streaming service, Deezer, to release an inclusive remake of The Weather Girls’ hit, ‘It’s Raining Men’. The new versions, ‘It’s Raining Them’, features rewritten lyrics to celebrate the non-binary and trans community that is too often left behind.
The Deezer Originals track is supported by the legendary Paul Shaffer, the songwriter for The Weather Girls’ ‘It’s Raining Men’ record. Lyric changes included switching “men” to “them”, and transforming iconic lines “rough and tough, and strong, and mean” to “proud and loud, and here, and seen”.
‘It’s Raining Them’ has received an incredible response from a global audience and great support from stars such as Gerri Horner, Laverne Cox and Tom Ellis.
Deezer’s streaming revenue from ‘It’s Raining Them’ is being donated to Gendered Intelligence, a charity that raises awards of gender diversity and aims to improve trans people’s quality of life.
‘It’s rainy Men’ can be found on Deezer’s dedicated ‘Queer Culture Channel’, which honours queer artists and creators with bespoke playlists, podcast recommendations and live recorded sessions. There is also a greater focus on non-binary performers, writers, and singers as well as trans people.
