In Mysterious Ways, Peter (played by Richard Short, known for his roles in The Tragedy of Macbeth and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan TV series) is a vicar in a small New Zealand town. His faith is tested when he is denied the right to marry his Samoan partner, Jason (portrayed by Nick Afoa, known for his role in The Lion King stage production), in the church where he has dedicated his life. This causes a division in the local community and triggers a media storm that challenges their relationship. The arrival of Jason’s gender-fluid nephew, Billy (played by Joe Malu Folau), adds further complications but also brings unexpected opportunities for moving forward.

Mysterious Ways is a powerful and courageous story confronting the church’s attitude toward the LGBTQI+ community, emphasizing how understanding can help faith, culture, and sexuality coexist. It also delves into the mystical significance of the third gender fa’afafine identity in Samoan society, as showcased in the documentary and film Next Goal Wins.

Mysterious Ways is available now on VOD.
