The Proud & Playful programme, which runs from 27–31 May, offers fun, creative, and affirming activities for children from birth to 12 years old.

The Common Press is a welcoming and independent bookstore situated in Shoreditch, dedicated to narratives that honour diversity, creativity, and community. Through the Common Press’ Proud & Playful initiative, they are crafting a special environment where queer families are not only embraced but also joyously celebrated.

Proud & Playful: A Queer Family Half-Term Celebration Event Line-up

Tuesday 27 May – Duck Pond (Ages 0–3)

In collaboration with Discover Children’s Story Centre, this sensory storytelling session invites little ones to waddle through rhyme, rhythm, and play with expert Story Builders. Tickets are available from free to a pay-what-you-can option. 

Wednesday 28 May – Time Tub Travellers and the Silk Thief (Ages 7–11)

Author Claire Linney leads an interactive workshop focused on Black British history, exploring time travel and storytelling. Tickets range from free to ‘pay what you can.’

Thursday 29 May – Rainbow Science with Sarah Cosgriff (Ages 8+)

Award-winning science communicator Sarah Cosgriff illuminates life in a hands-on workshop full of colour, curiosity, and queerness. Tickets range from free to £10.

Friday 30 May – Legends & Lore with Lizzie Huxley-Jones (Ages 8–12)

Join the author of Vivi Conway to explore myths, legends, and storytelling, and create your own tales. Tickets range from free to “pay what you can.”

Saturday 31 May – Drag Tales: Stories, Songs & Sparkle! (All Ages)

Fabulous, gender-diverse performers share their favourite childhood stories in a heartwarming storytime that celebrates differences and encourages imagination. Tickets range from free to £10.
