Working with acrylics on canvas, I aim to produce paintings that explore modern masculinity, often through a queer lens.

Mark Jackson

Particular themes of interest are masculinity, playfulness and vulnerability. I invite the viewer to reframe their understanding of what it is to be male and vulnerable today. I create a space in my work where the modern male is free to inhabit an almost childlike state, both removed from the expectation to be toxic and encouraged to let down his defences.

In my Pimlico studio I tend to work quickly and organically. I often start with something resembling chaos on the canvas. Wonderful, messy and unpredictable. From this emerge landscapes or intimate spaces. I then bring the piece into focus, often using figures from found imagery or photographs I’ve taken of models.

Denser layers of paint, mark making and embracing what could be considered mistakes are all essential to my process. In fact, I find that deviations from my intended line or composition produce my most exciting and painterly work.

Spring Collection runs from 1st April – 24th May at Palette and Frame, 79 Tottenham Lane, London N8 9BE, United Kingdom.

Palette and Frame Art Gallery, located in the heart of N8, is a welcoming creative space founded by artist Joe Barrow. The gallery aims to counter the formality often found in art spaces, making art accessible to everyone. This inclusive approach not only enhances the visitor experience but also supports a diverse range of artists. The gallery features local talent as well as underrepresented voices, reflecting the community’s rich mix of styles and stories. In addition to regularly changing exhibitions, Palette and Frame offers weekly life drawing classes and evening events that foster conversation and creativity. More than just a gallery, it serves as a neighborhood hub where people can discover new artists and connect with like-minded individuals in a relaxed environment.
