Have you ever sat watching a film of a concert by your favourite band in a cinema and wished you could’ve stood up and danced? Now you can, and more: for the first time ever, Playback Live and Sony Music Vision have created a brand new event at London’s Roundhouse on 3 October where it will actually feel like you’re at a real concert.

Queen’s iconic, remixed and remastered Budapest concert from 1986 will be shown on stage at the Roundhouse on a giant screen, with surround sound, gig lighting and special effects. A true fan event, the venue will feature original Queen memorabilia, a Queen Budapest merchandise shop, and a DJ playing music from the era before the concert kicks off.

Caroline Lockyer-Nibbs, Chief Executive at Playback Live, told QX: “We really wanted this to be a celebration of Queen. It’s not just about the screening; it’s about fans coming together, reliving these iconic moments and having a real shared experience. Coming just weeks after what would have been Freddie Mercury’s 80th birthday, the event will also be a celebration of Freddie, Queen and the extraordinary legacy of their live performances.”

During the concert, Queen perform iconic hits such as We Will Rock You, A Kind of Magic, We Are the Champions, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Under Pressure, Who Wants to Live Forever, Hammer to Fall, and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Documenting the first Western stadium rock show behind the Iron Curtain and the final filmed Queen live performance

Filmed on 27 July, 1986 at Budapest’s Népstadion during the band’s ‘The Magic Tour,’ this concert marked a groundbreaking moment as Queen became the first Western rock band to perform behind the Iron Curtain during a time of significant cultural and political change.

The concert was a huge success, with 80,000 tickets selling out and an estimated 45,000 people listening from outside the venue. Fans travelled from as far away as Russia and Poland to attend the event.

After this Queen would only play five more shows, concluding their touring days forever. Tragically, Freddie Mercury passed away just a month later. Their final performance took place at Knebworth Park in England on 9 August, 1986.
