Disco, Blisters & A Comedown

Dylan Jones’ roundup of new music for people who listens to music.

“He came during ‘Summertime Sadness’…and it wasn’t even the Cedric Gervais remix!” I heard that on the Overground when I was on my way home at 3pm on a Sunday. I actually did.

That fucking remix, honestly. And as if Lana Del Rey needed more adulation from the gays, she’s just released a new single called ‘High By The Beach’. I mean for god’s sake. It might as well have been called ‘Fire Island Freefall’. But it’s actually major. And in the video she blows up a helicopter with a big camp gun. 10/10. On a side note, a fun game is to turn your fave food and drinks into Lana Del Rey singles. Here are some examples to get you started; ‘Ferrero Rocher Melodrama’. ‘Balans Burger Baby’. ‘Pornstar Martini Sunrise’ (the music video for that one would involve a grainy sepia shot of her sitting on a stool in Ku Bar, mournfully pouring her champagne shot whilst Baga Chipz took a selfie).

Next up we’ve got a right stomper from Academy Award nominee slash indie fashion icon slash child prodigy slash pop star, HAILEE STEINFELD. This has come from nowhere! She’s sort of death dropped in. COME ON SEASON SIX. Sorry, ugh, awful. We don’t need any of that. Anyway her song is called ‘Love Myself’ and it’s like a cross between Sky Ferreira and Selena Gomez. E.g. amazing, obviously.

Special shout-out to Lady Leshurr whose flawless ‘Queen’s Speech’ videos have been doing the rounds on Facebook, racking up millions of views. It’s basically just her storming around car parks in London, spitting lyrical genius. If I were the sort of person who said “yaas” I’d be like “YAAAS MAMA WERK.” But I’m not. So instead, I’ll use actual, intelligible words and say that this is a genuinely valuable, critically viable contribution to the new, exciting wave of female-fronted hip-hop championed by artists like Angel Haze. Nice one babes.
