Women and LGBTQ+ take centre stage in The Wild Wood Disco’s diverse line Up. 17-19 June, Cambridgeshire. www.thewildwooddisco.com
The Wild Wood Disco has dropped its most diverse lineup yet with a large number of LGBTQ+ artists and collectives as well as a dazzling 50% female presenting lineup. Grammy award winning Jayda G, legendry crate digger Colleen Cosmo Murphy, Dan Shake, plus a number of leading queer DJs such as Gina Breeze, Michelle Manetti, Jennifer Loveless and Prosumer are just some of this years incredible programme.
In honour of Pride month, Sunday is serving Ethereal Rainbow Realness with takeovers from Homo-electric and Flash Ibiza, an overnight decor transformation and a best dressed competition – think outrageous, woodland chic, but most of all queer. Oh and the glorious winner will receive 4x tickets for 2023! With a 30-year history of running parties in Manchester, Homo-electric’s takeover is not to be missed. Flash Ibiza are bringing their queer parties for all to the woods with and not just their DJs but also their performers, including House of Ghetto and Hotline who will be creating a Homobloc style party to really give Sunday a different energy and vibe.
The Wild Wood Disco, that takes place in a woodland glade, south of Cambridge just over an hour from London. For the first time ever, it will run over three days from 17-19 June. Friday evening will be a takeover from Jive Talk and Friends with special guest Sean Johnston. Saturday sees headline performances from Jayda G, Dan Shake and Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, and Erol Alkan and Prosumer headlining on the Sunday.
Festival founder Vicky Fenton commented, “As a female building a festival from the ground up, I’ve faced my own challenges in this male dominated industry. I wanted to redress the balance not only with an equal lineup of fantastic, female, queer and male artists, but also by helping to nurture new talent. This is why I joined forces with renowned DJs Sophie Lloyd and Scarlett O’Malley to launch a competition to encourage emerging female talent. We had some great entries and I’m really looking forward to our competition winner DJ Jill‘s opening set on the Main Stage on Saturday.”
Inspired by Secret Garden Party and the woods at Shambala, the festival attracts a very mixed crowd and always promises to bring plenty of magic. The Wild Wood Disco is intimate, independent and created “for the love of a good party”. So although the aim is to attract anyone who is like minded, free spirited and has good vibes, no one parties better than the LGBTQ+ community.
The Wild Wood Disco began in 2017. It has grown and evolved, but remains true to its roots and is staying small, just 2,500 people, with four stages, many built from sourced material from the forest floor. With hidden paths to follow and secret areas to discover, interactive art installations and incredible decor – attention to detail is key.
The production levels are also very high with world class sound systems and incredible laser shows far superior to many of the larger festivals. Vicky commented, “It’s all about the wow factor and goosebump moments for the crowd, we love to bring that to people. It really feels totally different to all the homogenised festivals with big brands, VIP areas and huge crowds- we’re doing something really special and intimate like festivals did maybe 15 years ago, you can feel the love.”
Carefully chosen street food can be enjoyed throughout the weekend with MorMor from Manchester offering a sit down restaurant and wine bar hidden in the woods. The choice of drinks on offer is always well considered, with craft beer, tequila bars and plenty of good quality rosè – the founder’s favourite drink.
“It’s really exciting to return to one of the best festivals of last year. Set in the woods with a wonderful mix of people. To bring Homoelectric this year will be widening the diversity and adding more excitement to this great event.” – Luke Unabomber
“Imagine a classic free party from the early 90s. You’ll probably picture a farm, miles from the nearest neighbours, a sense of freedom and strangers becoming friends. In an ideal world, there’d be a clearing in the trees for the sound system, with the setting sun falling through the leaves to create a natural glitterball across the dance floor. Welcome to the Wild Wood Disco, one of the finest settings for a party we’ve ever seen.” – Groove Armada
