Julia Scotti: Funny That Way, a treat for Transgender Day of Visibility, 31 March.

Julia Scotti

A tender, powerful and funny portrait of transgender comedian Julia Scotti, Julia Scotti: Funny That Way explores the unrelenting courage and humour it takes to be Julia. The film is set to be released on digital platforms today, on Transgender Day of Visibility, 31 March 2023.

Julia Scotti Funny That Way

It was the comedy boom of the 1980s, and Rick Scotti was a very busy guy. He appeared in clubs across the country, on bills with Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock, when he came to the realisation that nothing felt right. At that time, the terms gender dysphoria and gender reassignment surgery were rarely heard, and Rick Scotti’s true awakening led to the creation of a new identity as Julia Scotti. All of Julia’s friends, family members, and friends in the comedy world turned away, and most painfully, she was isolated from her children. Having reinvented herself and spent a decade teaching, she returned to the stage several years ago and began her journey back to her family.

The award-winning documentary tracks Julia’s triumphant return and the complicated process of reuniting with her children as comedy becomes the shared language of identity, healing, and joy. The film was shot over five years and was produced and directed by Susan Sandler.

Julia Scotti: Funny That Way is available to rent/buy on Amazon Video and Bohemia Euphoria from 31st March 2023.

To celebrate International Transgender Day of Visibility, 31st March 2023, QX will be publishing an in depth interview with Julia Scotti with the live link to see the film.
