At The Vaults, term has officially begun, and the Grecian gods have crashed headfirst into a certain summer-lovin’ musical you probably grew up singing far too loudly, serving looks and rewriting the rules as they go!

Ancient Grease takes the iconic world of leather jackets and teen rebellion and reimagines it through a queer, joy-first lens. Rather than replacing what audiences love, this show asks a simple question: what happens when familiar stories are retold so that nobody shrinks themselves to belong? Because the idea that anyone should have to change? Respectfully, that is so 1970s.

The result is a parody musical that flips expectations, reshuffles relationships, and lets familiar archetypes discover their newest and most explosive desires! That’s the heart of the show. The rest is where the volume is turned up and everybody misbehaves. Drama? Always!

This is a parody musical that knows exactly what it is: raucous, silly, sexy, and unapologetically camp. Expect divine dance numbers, intoxicating anthems, and misbehaving gods serving divine realness from start to finish! We want you laughing, screaming at a chorus, and recognising yourself in the chaos – leaving with that rare feeling of belonging that comes from a space built on openness and acceptance.

And yes, it’s cheeky, occasionally filthy, but always done with a wink…

Leading the charge is director Dan Wye, critically acclaimed stand-up comedian and the creator of cabaret legend Séayoncé, bringing a sharp comic eye, a love of camp excellence, and a deep understanding of queer storytelling. The script also marks the debut production from emerging writer Lady Aria Grey, whose brain has been marinating in Ancient Greek myth and musical theatre for years.

Together with a company and cast packed with queer creatives, they’ve shaped a world where queerness isn’t a subplot. Crucially, this isn’t “queer” as a marketing garnish. It lives in the humour, the honesty, and the sense of permission running through the show: to be loud, to be soft, to be ridiculous, to be desired, and to be seen.

That sense of community extends beyond the performance. As part of commitment to supporting queer culture both on and off stage, Ancient Grease has partnered with Madame F, a wine brand created by and for the LGBTQIA+ community. For every bottle of Madame F English Fizz purchased during the performance, £1 is donated to Queer Britain, the UK’s first and only national LGBTQ+ museum. So when you raise a glass, you’re not just treating yourself — you’re helping preserve queer history and culture for future generations.

It’s a collaboration that reflects The Vaults’ wider philosophy. Beneath Waterloo Station, the venue has become London’s home for alternative arts by championing voices that don’t always fit traditional stages – especially those from the LGBTQIA+ community. The goal is simple: tell contemporary stories in outlandish, accessible, and joy-soaked ways.

Ancient Grease is exactly that – a case study in what happens when bold creatives are given permission to play. It’s theatre that refuses to take itself too seriously while still saying something meaningful about acceptance, identity, and joy.

So if you’re craving a night that feels less like sitting politely in a theatre and more like joining a hilarious, messy, and wildly alive celebration, Olympus Academy is ready for you – drinks in hand and chaos are fully encouraged, so come thirsty!

Ancient Grease runs from 4th March to 31st May at The Vaults Theatre, Launcelot Street, London SE1 7AD, United Kingdom.
