Pride Began as a Protest
In June 1969, after enduring years of police harassment and discrimination, patrons of New York’s Stonewall Inn fought back during a police raid. Among those who helped spark and maintain the uprising were trans women, drag queens, and gender non-conforming individuals, whose contributions have often been overlooked in the narratives of LGBTQ+ history. Pride emerged from that moment of resistance and solidarity, and more than fifty years later, that spirit is still there.
In the UK, many Queer people are growing increasingly concerned about public discussions that often challenge their place in society. Trans people, in particular, face heightened scrutiny regarding their rights to safety in public spaces, access to healthcare, and legal recognition. Simultaneously, the rhetoric surrounding LGBTQ+ lives and identities has become more hostile in certain areas of politics and the media. For many, these debates evoke a troubling sense of familiarity.
Pride Serves as a Reminder that Progress is Never Guaranteed
Rights can be achieved but also weakened, challenged, or gradually eroded. The freedoms enjoyed by one generation are not automatically passed down to the next. This is one of the reasons why queer books are important.
