X Factor chanteuse Kitty Brucknell and dance music diva Rebeka Brown are ready to blow the roof off the O2 this weekend for the Logan Presents anniversary party! Cliff Joannou and Lee Dalloway took the two gals aside to find out what they had in store for this weekend’s celebrations…
REBEKA BROWN
It has been my job for nearly 12 years, so I could say I’m kind of an expert on how club life goes and works… but I’m no party animal. Club work requires balance to stay in the game so long. I feel very comfortable in the clubs. It has been my environment for so long that I feel at home. In the beginning I started as a DJ, so I know the dance floor code. I have to admit it’s hard work. It’s a very tiring job especially when I am not a teenager anymore! The combination of lots of travelling, sleepless nights and wounded toes is heavy, but I am very proud I have succeeded in this industry. Although dance music and clubbing remains popular, we have had to fight to keep it alive and make this industry a respected career.
What have you been up to this past summer?
I’ve been touring around with my Discodramah show and it constantly changes and adapts to different formats around the world. I was honored to open for some big shows in Privilege, Ibiza last summer including Taio Cruz and shooting my two new music videos.
What new music are you looking forward to releasing?
I just launched the ‘Big Bad Bitch’ music video with a porn star, Nacho Vidal, and choreographed by Spain’s number 1 choreographer, Rafa Mendez. The remixes will be released in January 2012. My next single to be released this Christmas is ‘Feel it Inside’ with Carlos Gallardo, also launching a music video very soon. I’m also working on some new stuff with Juanjo Martin and some other big surprises. I’m excited to work on acoustic versions of some of my well known tracks, as well as putting together a charity show while exploring new genres in music. I have always wanted to develop my other music styles. So it’s time for the world to know who the real Rebeka Brown is! LOL
How did you get into singing and working in dance music?
Naturally. Singing has been a way of expression for me since I was a little girl. In parties, you would never find me dancing around, I always kept my eyes glued to the DJ, learning his moves. I find DJs incredibly sexy! Around the age of 16 I entered into the electronic scene. I loved to buy records on my trips and play unique vinyl, make impossible mixes, plug the mic and improvise. I was always attracted to mixing all kinds of different styles. On the other hand, I studied drama and music – piano and singing – so I was always connected to the showbiz industry. From musicals to bands there was always performance, but around 2001 the house music got to me, so I decided to give all my energy to dance. There didn’t seem to be many people doing this circuit. Just a few divas on the disco scene but it seemed like a new niche, and that is where I began.
“I feel honored to be back in London with these hot boys and for this very special Anniversary event.”
What have been your favourite performances so far?
Wow! There are so many. But the performances that I tear up the most to are those in Ibiza; Space, Amnesia, Privilege. The south of Spain is amazing, and my other favorites include Brazil, Moscow, and Mykonos and I always love my hometown Barcelona. My best gigs are with Juanjo Martin or Tato Sanchez, who will be joining me in London on Saturday. I have been around the globe, but I have to admit Ibiza has an energy like no other place in the world.
It’s been ages since you were in London. What can we look forward to this weekend at the Logan Presents party?
Watch out London! We are going to blow the roof off the O2. I will do two parts: the first set will cover some of my big hits with choreographed dancers, and the second set will be freestyle, the true essence of Rebeka Brown. I love improvising and surprising the audience while working closely with the DJ. Get ready London, the bitch is back!
Have you had much opportunity to explore London on your previous visits?
I have been coming to London since I was very young, especially for shopping, buying music, concerts, theatres and visiting friends. I used to love to get lost in those tiny record stores, although many of them have disappeared. I feel honored to be back in London with these hot boys and for this very special Anniversary event put together by my friend Logan. I know he has something big in store! See you Saturday night.
KITTY BRUCKNELL
How was the X Factor experience overall for you?
Amazing! Just the most incredible thing. Really stressful and it can get to you at times, but overall the best thing I could have possibly done in my life. I can’t wait for the tour.
Would you recommend any aspiring artists to use it as a way to get in the music industry?
I think you need to be very sure of what kind of artist you want to be, and to remember that rejection in front of 14 million people is hard on anyone! It’s a great platform, but it isn’t the only way.
You were quite a controversial character this year and we saw your journey from the slightly uncomfortable audition to full-on, show-stopping diva. Do you feel the public warmed to you over the live shows?
I really don’t know! I know that when I left a lot of people told me that they wished I had stayed, which is always good to hear, and honestly I’m just proud of what I managed to achieve.
What would you say were the best and worst parts of your experience with the X Factor?
Best part was probably making the tour and then doing ‘Sweet Dreams’… worst part was being in the bottom two!
What was it like working with Louis and do you still see him?
Louis was great, such a great mentor. I don’t really have much contact now, but he’s very busy at the moment, maybe next year.
How was the mood in the house? It must have been weird, as there’s a camaraderie because you’ve all been thrown in this mad situation together but there’s also no getting away from an underlying rivalry, because you were all there to win. How was your personal experience?
The house was fine, we were just really busy every single day and I think a lot of things were blown way out of proportion. But we all get on great now!
“Dance-rock, but big, super gay and a bit burlesque. That’s pretty much me!”
What are your hopes and plans for the future?
Hopes and dreams? To have a great tour, to get an album out and hopefully sell records, that’s what I’ve wanted to do my whole life.
What can we expect from you on Saturday…
Dance-rock, but big, super gay and a bit burlesque. That’s pretty much me!
