Nighty Night Night

16/03/2016: HIYA CATH! A few weeks ago the Vauxhall Tavern put the choice for their upcoming cinema night to an audience vote on social media, and out of nowhere the cult, dark BBC3 comedy Nighty Night won by a landslide.

If you’ve never seen this genius series, written by and starring Julia Davis, it can best be described as a west country Basic Instinct with a shedload of beautifully delivered and fabulously inappropriate gags. Jill Tyrell, a ‘widow’ in her mid 20’s who has a lust for life and a flexible spine is the main character.

Nighty Night is a favourite amongst the LGBT community, as the RVT found out. It was initially planned to be an open door event but such was the demand it had to be made (free) ticketed. The tickets were all snapped up within fifteen minutes of being released.

Over 150 devotees gathered to watch series one and raise money for the charity Rethink Mental Illness. Quotes from the show were all over the grade two listed RVT: ‘filled the bowl twice over’ on the toilet door had us howling! DJ Stephanie Von Clitz was on hand with the throwback tunes and the odd ‘HUG FOR JILL’ on the mic.

It’s a testament to the greatness of the show and quick planning from the venue that everyone was transfixed throughout. And a little birdie tells us HRH Julia Davis found out about it.

Speaking in an interview with The Independent on Sunday she said, ‘I love that Jill is a gay icon. Mark Gatiss sent me a photo the other day showing that there was going to be a Nighty Night Night at the Vauxhall Tavern and I think that’s great.” Following the success of the event the Vauxhall Tavern now have a further two Nighty Night Nights planned. It would be AMAZING if there was a ‘special’ guest too, wouldn’t it? And a Twix for dippin’.
