WIGS ‘R’ US

Think He-Man (or She –Ra!), My Little Pony, Thundercats, Action Man, Barbie and more when this year Wig Party goes to ‘Toyland’…

JOSHUA REFTER, WIG PARTY CHAIRMAN

“The Wig Party’s back! You can now get tickets for the year’s most sensational party – and raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation at the same time. We return to Café de Paris for what will be our most extravagant and fun event yet. The team of volunteers who help put the party together is bigger and better than ever and our theme is one of my all-time favourites – Wigs in Toyland.

“Expect the usual outrageous ensembles from our hardcore fans – but don’t worry if dressing up’s not your thing: you can wear as much – or as little – as you like, as long as you’ve got your wig on. Tickets are available on the door but it’s such a popular event that we recommend you get yours in advance.

“As well as donating to Elton’s AIDS Foundation, we are also using profits to support Freedom to Be. The organisation runs a five-day support camp and invites 100 teenagers living with HIV to take part in activities that help them meet others and boost their self-esteem. They’ll also attend workshops to help them learn more about HIV.

“So, basically, tonnes of great reasons to get your Sunday best on and party on down with me and the rest of the Wig Party posse. But if fun and fundraising is not enough to entice you out on a Sunday evening, we’re in talks with a BIG star about performing on the night. More on that soon folks.”

JONNY HOOLEY ASSUAGES YOUR FIRST-TIME WIG PARTY FEARS…

Well Wiglets, the time is fast approaching for the annual Wig-anza that is The Wig Party, and this year yours truly is leaving her post as Door Host to glide down the staircase of the Cafe De Paris and work on this year’s pageant. Yes that’s right, my heavily fake lashed eyes will be scanning the crowds of you Wiglets even more closely! But what a marvellous theme this year, as The Wig Party goes to Toyland!

I know there are some of you Wiglets out there who as regulars to this event, will already be working with a team of dressmakers, hairdressers and make-up artists on a show stopping, eye popping, walking weave of art – J’adore!

But have no fear little Wiglets if you are a virgin to the party, help is here!

You can blow your budget or you can work on a budget!

If your idea of Toyland is going to be dressing up as Barbie – and I am talking to all you Muscle Wiglets out there! – then you don’t have to come with a make-up covered body, waist length real hair wig and a couture gown (though that does sound D-lish) this look can be achieved for around £40 on the high street!

Go to your nearest Primani where there are racks of short , spangly mini frocks (approx £10) and glittery heels (£12). Shoes sizes go up to a 9, which a certain type of “lady” can usually slip/stuff into!

The most important part of this look, the wig, can be found in most fancy dress shops. A synthetic , blonde , one night only wig will cost around £15. That leaves £13 for make-up and lashes from Superdrug and Bargain Barbie is ready for the ball!

“Just because this is a Wig Party, it doesn’t necessarily equal a drag race!”

Of course, just because this is a Wig Party, it doesn’t necessarily equal a drag race! That’s more of a lifestyle choice for some – ahem! Cheap fancy dress shops are also totes perf for picking up those 80’s tinsel wigs for £5!

Team a silver one of these with a kitchen funnel from a ‘£ shop’ sprayed silver and with a flick and a slick of some silver face paint and you have the makings of a toy robot/Tin Man ensemble! See, wigs can be butch, too!

The great aspect of Wigs in Toyland as a theme is ideas can go in all directions. Think back to all those superhero action figures you had as a child. A Cabbage Patch doll can be created by buying balls of wool and making a wig for that.

But then also what about making a wig from toys? Lego can be fashioned into A-MAZE-ING mohawks and slinkys can be twisted into fierce afros!

My message to all you dear Wiglets is you can go to town to impress in a major production, but what is really required is you being there even if it’s just in a wig and your normal pedestrian clothes, having fun, raising money for charity and dreaming up your look for next year!

It’s going to be totally Toy-tastic!
