Lead singer of Years & Years, best known for hit singles “King” and “desire”, Olly Alexander is taking on his first major acting role. He joins Keeley Hawes, Stephen Fry, Neil Patrick Harris, Tracy Ann Oberman, Shaun Dooley, Omari Douglas, Callum Scott Howells and Lydia West in the cast of Boys.
The 5-part drama series follows a crop of boys living in 1981 who are new to London. Strangers at first, the young gay men find themselves thrown together, and soon share each other’s adventures.
Olly Alexander is set to play 18-year-old Ritchie Tozer, the family’s golden boy, though he’s determined to keep his secrets from them.
In the series, we’ll get a glimpse back at London’s gay scene in the 1980s. As the decade passes, the boys will be coming into their own in the shadow of the AIDS crisis.
The show is written by BAFTA-winning queer screenwriter Russell T Davies, best known for his work on Queer As Folk, A Very English Scandal, Years and Years and Doctor Who. According to How I Met Your Mother actor Neil Patrick Harris who’s set to appear on the show, the series is an “irresistible, funny, jubilant story of young people discovering their true identities.”
Speaking about his new role, Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander shared:
“I feel like the luckiest boy in the world to be a part of this project, I’ve been a fan of Russell T Davies ever since I watched Queer As Folk in secret at 14 years old. His work helped shape my identity as a gay person so I’m absolutely over the moon we’ll be working together. The script was amazing to read, I laughed and I cried a lot, it’s a privilege to be helping to tell this story and I’m so excited.”
Filming begins next week and the series will air on Channel 4 in 2020.
