Honcho at the RVT
Royal Vauxhall Tavern 372 Kennington Lane, London, United KingdomFirst birthday party, so expect lots and lots of sweat, skin, buns and bulges on stage to get the party started.
The Royal Vauxhall Tavern (RVT) is a venue with many stories. Freddie Mercury and Princess Diana went there once, with Di in total man drag. Lily Savage used to skitter across the stage. She lacerated both punters and homophobic police officers alike with her barbed tongue. They’ve been “serving confirmed bachelors and friends long before Kylie was born”. The Royal Vauxhall Tavern also prides itself in serving some of the city’s best alternative entertainment, from pop party mashups to world-class queer theatre and cabaret. The RVT is a must for any queer tourist in London.
One of the highlights of the London queer calendar is at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern: The RVT Sports Day. It is on the August bank holiday, and since 2007, the queer community has been flocking to the RVT Sports Day at the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens behind the Royal Vauxhall Tavern to help raise money for LGBT HERO. Events are hugely camp and include 50m mince, Sack Race, Tug of War, Drag race relay, Three-legged race, Handbag toss and Rhythmic gymnastics. You’ve got to join in once in your life, as it’s so much fun.
Most events at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern are a mix of either standing or seated. The limited seating is allocated on a first come first served basis. The RVT is accessible, but they do not have a disabled toilet.
