G-A-Y presents Ben Haenow

13/12/14: Corkers, crackers, confetti and… cake. Lots and lots of Victoria Sponge cake.

That would be a more than an apt summation of Heaven nightclub’s last big blowout before the scene turns off the bright lights temporarily for Christmas – a night that saw Ben Haenow take the stage. The latest X Factor winner has a lot to celebrate this year, storming into the much coveted Christmas 2014 No.1 with his cover of One Republic’s ‘Something I Need’, surprising the industry by relegating Ronson’s mammoth ‘Uptown Funk’ to second place in the charts. All the success didn’t seem to have got to Britain’s latest pin up and pop personality quite yet, with the former Croydon white van man emerging to Ike and Tina’s ‘Come Together’ before a screaming crowd in a trademark jeans, white top and leather jacket ensemble. What followed was no less than the expected soulful, snappy and often smooth set – culminating in his current No.1. It was while sat on the stage serenading the boys before him that Haenow was gifted a gobful of iced sponge, specially made to mark the moment. What followed was bedlam – with Jeremy Jospeh fighting to keep a face free of flour – and even the boys on the main floor failing to successfully dodge fistsfuls of fluffy mixture. Did we mind? Course not, ‘tis this season for it! We’ll be looking forward to working off any post-holiday pounds at Heaven’s ‘Free Party’ next weekend, until then – Merry Christmas!
